When I called Ford to find out, they told me to use ATF in my 89 f250 5 speed. In my opinion, if you are unsure, call Ford. (Record your call just incase they screw up)

What for? Your vehicle is not under warranty. Furthermore Ford isn't liable for what happens to your vehicle even if you follow their instructions. Their liability ended with the owner's manual, and the original warranty.

It's worked for me in the past when I owned a dodge, they told me something that screwed up my jeep and since the call was recorded (by me) the were liable. I just make sure to cover my butt
I called the Ford dealer and he said his book only goes back to 1988 but that it recommends an ATF for their manual transmissions. What is everyone else out there using for a manual trans? ATF sounds to light.
An easy way to remember what manual tranny takes what:
If it is a cast iron M/T, it will take gear oil. If it is an aluminum M/T it will take ATF.

I'm getting an 87 F150 this afternoon with the 4spd manual transmission. I called the Ford dealer and he said his book only goes back to 1988 but that it recommends an ATF for their manual transmissions. What is everyone else out there using for a manual trans? ATF sounds to light.

not trying to sound like an ***, but this thread is 12 years old.
not your fault, it is the fault of the stupid "related topics" line showing way outdated threads and not highlighting original post dates.
