With the Mazda transmission, you use ATF. Make sure you have the Mazda transmission of the manual contradicts what its saying.

i was wrong the manual says the 4 speed before 93 use gear oil. all five speeds use atf. i already drained it and filled it with gear oil. i have been driving now for over a week with gear oil in it. that might explain the rough shifting a little. as gear oil is thicker than atf.

Do you guys think this has caused any real problems with the tranny.

going to change it tommorrow, and also i read somewhere to add 4 ounces of friction modifier to the fluid. is this true? thanks guys

Probably didn't hurt much of anything since you didn't drive it that long. I would just drain the transmission and then put the 4 quarts of ATF in it and drive it 20 miles or so and then drain it out. Then top it off with a clean fill of ATF. That shoudld get 96% of the gear oil out. If you want to do an extra 3% drain and fill it one more time.
