I have a 78 f-150 style side long bed 2wd and i have been thinking about trying to make it a 4wd. I have a found a place the sells a new process transfer case that I could get for around 200 bucks but then I would need the front axle and driveline. and i'm guessing a new speedo cable and rear driveline, but before I go and try to do this I just wanted to ask if it was possible to even do this. also what axle's did they put on the 78 4wd models? please let me know what you guys think about this idea and if it would be possible to do and what i would need to be able to do this. thanks for all your help.
It can and has been done many times, but its not something for the faint of heart. There is a lot of welding and frame modifications (the 4WD used a different frame).
There are already several threads here about this very subject.
You should posses very good mechanical and welding skills (and a 4WD donor truck wouldn't hurt either!).
The front crossmember is different on a 2wd compared to a 4wd. It is quite extensive to make a 2wd frame into a 4wd. It is easier to cut and splice the front section of a 4wd frame to your 2wd rear section than to modify the front of your 2wd frame.
