Im on here for a freind now, not me for once. My freind has an 04 Lariat. A couple of weeks ago he was getting a bang from the rear end after he would make a turn and start going straight again. He took it to his dealership and they replaced the clutch packs. Well less than 100 miles later the bang is back. He hasnt been hard on the truck (Isnt hard on the truck anyway) since he had the clutch packs replaced. Could this be the clutch packs again? Or is there something else that could be going on. They also pulled the slip yoke out and cleaned it and lubed it while they did the clutch packs. The truck is currently back at the dealership, but you know they drove it once and didnt hear it. Thanks guys.
I had this problem on my 04 FX4 and after considerable research found that Ford trucks have an issue with the rear driveshaft slip yoke binding making a clunk on take off and stopping. Thought I was having differential issues as well, but did not have play in the pinion and plenty of oil and added additive to make sure clutches were lubricated.
Request you buy the blue teflon grease in a pint can from Ford (expensive), take the drive shaft out and put generously on the splines of the slip yoke. This remedy also cured a 02 250, 03 Expedition, and 02 E350. There is a TSB out on this but not widely known. I've read where others have used non-OEM grease with good results, but did not last. I've rergeased mine twice in 50,000 miles.
I will tell him, but the dealership did pull the driveshaft and lube the slip yoke when it was in for the clutch packs. Would the dealership have used a lesser grease do you think?
Do not want to speculate on what a shop may use, but would give them the benefit of the doubt. Any noise on stopping or taking off should answer the question with driveshaft issues.

That doesn't sound like slip yoke to me. But is classic for worn out limited slip. I wonder if the stealership cleaned out the housing to get all the debree out. One would think they put the correct lube back in. However.......
I would suspect limited slip issues, like the clutch packs being too tight, worn out, or no friction modifier in lube. I never had any kind of bang with my 05 SD with limited slip, but I do have an occassion noise coming from my F150. The clutches are tighter on the F150 than they were on the SD.
