Any tips? I plan on pulling injector 8 and 4 first to let the oil drain off... is that wise rather than pulling the rail plugs?
I also plan on doing them 1 at a time. and then cranking the engine over with the fuse pulled to get the oil out of the cylinder while the rest of the injectors are still in, in between putting the injector back in... will this cause issues? Will I have to drain the HPOP reservoir? how bout filling the oil rails back up to fire the truck back up, i would like to make it as easy to start as possible.
call me if you need help. you got my number. i can talk you through everything to do..
i don't pull the rail plugs. i just start with the front and pop them loose one at a time and take them out as fast as possible. so make sure you have a rag with you up there. pop it loose with your pry bar and very quickly grab it and pull it out and put the rag around it so the oil doesn't all drop in the cylinder. take it and set it down and check and make sure the copper washer is on the end. only take out the TOP injector hold down bolt. the bottom hole is slotted so you can get it off without pulling the bottom bolt. take off the little black vacuum box that will get in your way when pulling the passenger side valve cover... and when you pull the glow plugs get you a piece of fuel line that fits the ends snug and just pop them loose with your 10mm deep socket then put the fuel line on there and twist it out. also use the fuel line to get them all started back in there. thats just a few tips. haha. and MAKE SURE YOU VACUUM THE CYLINDERS BEFORE INJECTOR INSTALL!!!! haha
It's the Top holddown bolt that is slotted and it stays. Not the other way around like Travis said. Only the bottom holddown bolt comes out. Me, I don't mess with doing the rail plug or doing one injector at a time, or just the top while shoving a rag down the hole.
What I do is pull all the injectors at once as well as all the glow plugs. Let everything drain into the cylinders. Once you reinstall all the injectors, put the VC's back on and snug a couple of the bolts. With either the harness unplugged or the fuse out, bump the starter to clear the cylinders. Pull vc's, reinstall gp's, wires, fuses, etc then button everything up. Crank till it starts and you're good to go.
Also on the o-rings, install them on the injectors and let them set a MINIMUM 30 minutes. You have to stretch them around the injector to install so they need to "shrink" or reform before installing. If it's cold outside and you don't have a heated shop to work in, then take them inside the house where it's warm. That will help. Before reinstall, I always dunk the injectors in oil so that it's lubed up good to slide in better.
Thats alot of fluid to be pushing out with compression When I pulled my injectors I vacuumed out the fluid and couldn,t believe how much there was I couldn,t even imagine the mess that would make LOL, I still turned it over with the glow plugs out just to get whatever was left . but for start up I filled the rails full of oil first and it started first try.

I pull the back injectors (#8 and #7) and let it set for abotu 20 minutes. Then I suck out those back 2 cylinders and remove the rest. Doing this you'll only have fuel/oil in the back 2 holes. If you can't vac them out, then with the 'new' injecotrs back in you remove the gp's, BOLT the valve covers on and crank it over. Crank for about 30 seconds or so, this also helps to purge air in the HPOil system as is spins easy and fast.
Make sure your o-rings are warm. Not sure how cold it is there, but they were left out in a cold shop, maybe drop them all in hot/warm water to soften them up.
i remove the oil plugs from at the back of the head and from the front of the head, then stick a blow gun in the front hole and blow out most of the oil. drain the fuel canister and that helps alot. then i do 4 and 8 first. after they are all reinstalled i spin it over by hand a few times with the glow plugs removed. after a few turns by hand i do it by the starter, about 10-15 seconds worth (injectors unplugged) then reinstall gp's and go for start.. i fell this is the fastest way and keeps the most oil out of the pistons. always crank by hand first!
cowmilker, the driver side is the even side starting from the front and goes like this 2, 4, 6, then 8 is the very back. the passenger side starting from the front is 1,3,5, then 7 is the very back. i'm pretty sure this is right. i know all the even cylinders are on one side and odds are on the other and i'm pretty positive the evens are on the driver side.

nope fords are as :
Passenger side front going to the back. 1,2,3,4
Drivers side front going to the back 5,6,7,8
hmmmm... coulda sworn it was the other wayy!!!!! haha. maybe Jim can tell us. Matt just remember that engine is not a ford engine. its international navistar. haha. i know my 5.0 is like you said, but i don't think the PSD is that way

Guess that is what threw me off... LOL I know the gassers quite well, but the diesels are a little bit rusty... still learning... the injectors all have new O rings on them now... Im taking a small break, and they will go back in! then the glow plugs come out, and i will purge the air, and we will be all set! I wont start it tonight though...
Straight pipe next week, and this should be a whole new animal... Should I see any performance gain with Injector O rings? Reason I am doing them is Rough idle and poor fuel mileage...
