Ok , here goes -- hi everyone my name is lance and i live in Portland , Oregon . I like to fish and not work on cars . I have limited tools and am not a mechanic , but inclined . I have a 1991 f150 with the 6 . i have had this truck for alot of years and it never breaks . I changed the oil , put in coolant , and changed the plug wires . also new battery today . After doing all seemed good and then sputter , pop , pow , smokin , . to keep it going I had to spur the pedal and hang on . It will run a little longer than 8 secs but man . Where and what went wrong , endless I guess . When it quit the other day I thought I was out of gas . Put gas in and thats when it all went sour . Can someone help with some comments .
Wires = Bosch from knechts , plugs are old , didnt replace cap / rotor I can say the truck ran fine all the time up until I started monkeying with it . I put 5 gal new fuel using the front tank does anyone have a diagram from cap to plugs . And also , it is smokin real bad smelling kinda gassy , it never smoked before . I pulled the plugs and they were real dry ,maybe to dry ? just a thought ---- thanx
Forgive me if Im an idiot , I drained the radiator and put 50\50 prestone . Was that a boner move ? I thought it always had coolant before . Please enlighten me for I do make some dumb mistakes . I replaced the fuel filter . I'm just stumped . Fuel pump could have failed . thanx
Sounds to me like you just mixed up the firing order on your new plug wires.
It is the only modification that would cause these symptoms and it is more then likely the problem.
I wouldn't be concerned with head gasket just yet.
a 50/50 mix of prestone is fine. Remember that water rusts metal!!
If it all started when you tuned it up, then likely you took a wrong turn somewhere.
By your described running condition, I would also suspect that you may have put the plug wire on in the wrong order. The correct order is indeed 153624, so double check that.
Here's a pic of the order, since I'm assuming that if you had a manual, you wouldn't of asked.....that's what were here for.
Did you remove cap & rotor?
You say you put 5 gallons of gas in the front tank.....???
....Do you not normally use the front tank?...Why did you state that?
Since the plugs worked fine, i'll assume that is not the problem either.
I'd check the order of the wires and let us know what you find.
If you've not touched anything else, than I'm not sure what could have caused the condition, unless it's related to the gas somehow. In this case, hope it's just something you did wrong.
Either way, we'll need more info
with the correct firing order and the fact that most caps have #1 marked a picture is not really needed.
The diagram helps if you do not know the direction of rotation on the distributor since the '91 does not have a vacuum advance to point it out for you.
