Can you add cruise control to a Ranger if it didn't come equipped from the factory? It's easy to get the wheel switches on eBay, but what else is required?
I used a brand called specfic cruise control. It workes very well for me. I bit of advice. The ranger engine compartment is very tight choose the cruise control system that takes up the least amout of space.
Got the cruise control working Friday. Here is what I've learned. First thing I did was gather the parts I needed: speed control servo (98 Ranger or similar Exploder), Lighting and accessory wiring harness with the engine compartment fuse box and bulkhead connectors (98 Ranger with CC), Brake master cylinder with speed control pressure switch (Ranger or Exploder with rear drums and RABS.), Steering wheel controls(Non CC wheel will need trimming on side plastic to fit switches) (Ranger Exploder).
I replaced my original harness and MC with the parts I got from the wrecking yard, I was rewarded with no CC and a MIL. The harness I got was from a Ranger with a 4.0L I have a 3.0L flex fuel. The MIL was for a circuit malfunction in the flex fuel sensor circuit. I printed up some wiring diagrams from Mitchell and looked for differences in the harnesses. I had to move one wire from the black bulkhead connector to the grey (pm for details if interested) no more MIL and the sensor was showing a signal.
Next step was to get the CC working. I took a closer look at the wiring coming from the clock spring wiring in the steering wheel and what was connected to the interior harness. all the wires for the interior harness were there but Ford only gave me the wires for the air bag and horn. So i went back to the yard and got a new clock spring assembly out of an Explorer with CC. I pulled the steering wheel put the assembly in and connected it to the harness. I have been using my CC all weekend and I love it. Best $70 I've spent on my truck. Hope this helps someone it took a little work but for the most part it was plug and play and no splicing nice and clean.
