The braided stuff is OK, it is used in a lot of factory apps. The spiral-wound stuff is generally NOT OK, because it has a strong tendency to break or leak along the seams due to it being of wound construction, and I think that's why so many states don't allow it.

The actual way the law reads here is the exhaust must exit behind any opening into the passenger compartment.
Back when side pipes were the rage, the only cars that could run them legally was a Vette Coupe.
And they were OK on a pickup, Ranchero or El Camino.
I remember lots of guys with Mustangs making the rear window inoperable trying to do an end around on the inspection law.
Almost every Class 8 truck has flex pipe in the exhaust system somewhere right off the factory floor.
