Tonight my ignition switch started giving me a hard time. When I went to pull the key out of the switch with it in Park, I couldn't move the key to the "OFF" position. I did find out if I put the transmission in "Reverse" or nutral it would switch off without any problems. Then the key would pull right out. What is involved with replacing the switch?
I tried lifting the transmission lever all around but the only way I found to get the key out was to shift to "R" or "N". I guess it might help to explain what I have. 1987 F250 N/A extended cab automatic transmission.
The problem may be with the ign switch actuator. It is a pot metal thing that connects the key switch to the ign/start switch and also operates the shift lever Park lock. Mostly they fail leaving the shift lever locked in Park but it could be your problem.
Unfortunately you have to tear into the steering column to get at it.
The one on my brothers 89 f-150 with 4-speed broke, now our 86 f-250 with 4-speed broke. My brother did the last one and claims its kind of a pita to put a new one in.
good luck..........for now we pulled off the cover and start it with a pliers.
OK, after I posted the last time the switch started working fine. Is there any kind of lubrication I can spray or let run down thru the ignition switch?
To get where it needs to go, I am going to say the steering wheel needs to come off.
Then a good dose of lithium grease on everything that moves, tilt wheel parts as well.
As far as inside the key switch, dry graphite is all I will use.
The ignition lock is not a good place to try, as stated, you need to come in from behind the lock plate and turn signal switch. While you are there, snug up the bolts on the pivot for the tilt wheel... I personally think the ignition switch itself is more likely the issue, as they get to binding after a while. It is possible for the rack gear to be binding as well, and greasing it would work fine. They use a decent grease on them when they assemble them. My 86 is a little hard to operate when cold, but is fine any other time. Could be ignition switch, could be the rack, but I am having some electrical issues starting to show up.
