Hey guys, I haven't been around in a while, but I was hoping someone could help me. A while back I had bowtiehatr run an OASIS for me. He had said that he was surprised I hadn't had any turbo problems due to the truck sitting on the lot for a long time. It was a new 04 that I bought in August of 05 with 2 miles on it. Since then, I have given the truck to my dad, and now the turbo has been acting up as he had predicted. My dad has had the truck in a few times, and the dealer hasn't been able to "replicate" the problem. It is getting worse and worse now, and he really needs to get it taken care of. Is there any advice you could give me? Is the anyone else on here that is a ford diesel tech (I see bowtiehatr hasn't been on in a while). If there is a Ford Tech, could you state what dealer you work for, and that you agree this is more than likely a turbo problem? I'm trying to come up with something for my dad to walk in there with that might get their attention. The symptoms are:
-It started with some funny surging and died at a traffic light. Restarted immediately. This instance recurred, was taken to the dealer and they couldn't replicate. This has happened for about 9 months now.
-Within the last month, he has had no response when pressing the accelerator on different occasions.
-It seems down on power.
-Coasting up to a light tonight the truck idled, then when he tried to go, it went no where. He tried to turn it off and restart and it wouldn't start tonight for the first time. He took a 2x4 and tapped the turbo and then it started right up and ran fine.
-Running on the highway, he hit 35lbs of boost today (stuck open I presume).
If there is any help you could offer, it would be greatly appreciated.
ok as a tech for ford I will say sounds like you have to issues going on. one is egr related and the valve is getting hung open. next to hit 35 psi of boost the turbo would have to hang up.
Now the sad part is that if the truck is not doing it and you have a tech/advisor/manager that is not looking in to the issue a little bit then you may be best served by going to a different shop.
also have you checked dtc's with a scan tool yet?
it will take 40 key cycles to clear a code. you can pop the egr valve out and take a look in the intake and see if it full of carbon. also you getting any kind of smoke outta the pipe when this happens, and if so what color?
Bad EBP sensors can cause turbo like symptoms and codes. If/when you pull the EGR valve, also clean the EBP tube and the MAP sensor hose. Check the connectors also.
What are you using to scan for codes? There are codes that you will not be able to get with a regular tuner/code reader or what they have at the local auto parts store. Just because those show no codes, doesn't mean you really don't have any codes being thrown. You may not have codes, but then again you may.
The last time it was at the dealer Oct 1st it was re-flashed and has not been changed since. Since the re -flash there has been virtually nothing coming out of the exhaust. I use to see the black smoke but not since re-flash
Yes, there was no tune since the reflash. We wanted to be sure it wasn't a tune issue. The issue is resolved now, they gave us a refurbed turbo and we've had no issues, thanks for the responses guys.
