Been reading about the death wobble hoping my truck won't get it.
Well going down the freeway today about 68 mph, hit a spot that was a little rough. Nothing you would normally worry about.
The steering wheel started shaking, the cab started shaking real bad. The doors were banging. It was kind of like going down a washboard gravel road at 68 mph, only worse.
Let off the gas when I got under 50 mph it went away.
If it was heavy traffic that could have caused a wreck.
In 30 years of driving trucks never experienced anything like this.
My old Dodge with 150,000 miles on it doesn't even do it. And that truck has seen better days.
Called the dealer, talked to the salesman asked if he was aware of a shimmy problem with this truck. He said he was not aware of this problem on Fords.
Talked to the service department asked if Ford had a fix for it, he was pretty evasive. Said bring it in they will look at it.
From what I've been reading Ford hasn't been much help.
So I guess I'll try and fix it myself. So should I start with new shocks. Bilsteins, which ones.
Thanks for any help with this.
PS This really stinks, I thought thought I was moving up coming back to Ford. Had the truck less than 3 weeks and already a problem.
What year truck? What mods? State of suspension? You're not giving us much.... Any offroad truck with lifts or larger than OEM tires with worn suspension can have issues...
Ford calls it 'oscillation'
There is a TSB to tighten things down, replace the stock steering stabilizer, check settings, alignment and tire pressure.
The Bilstein HD (yellow and blue, for non-lifted) will help a lot.
The TSB and Bilsteins solved it for me. Or at least solved it until the steering stabilizer and shocks wear out.
Snelldawg is right on. This happened on my 06 at 60k. First thing i did was a dual steering stabilizer. I had ball joints and alignment done 5k prior to that and tires were still great so it can happen regardless of front end condition as yours even did it at 27k.
The shocks as well should be swapped out as soon as you get the chance.
yup ford is screwing everyone that baught one of theese trucks ! and as far as the safty board . right , how many of theese complaints you thunk have been sent in , Still no action . ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY ,NOT THE SAFETY !!! .
Well, I thinks it goes with the territory in this day and age. I don't know or think that there has been any "deaths" associated with the "death" wobble to date but Ford will not recall this as this would be a huge expense for them. In addition Ford knows most if not all can be cured with consumer replacements, repairs or upgrades.
