After looking for a while, I've found a truck that I'd like to buy and wanted some input. It's a 76' F-150, 4x4, 4spd. It has 119,000 miles. 3rd owner. The guy says it has a 390, I asked him if it was a 360, and he said he was told 390, but that he knew the previous owner and neither of them ever did an engine swap. He isn't very knowledgable about these old trucks. He isn't a very good salesman, and kept telling me how much he has taken it off road and how much crap he has put it through. This has made me very skeptical. Does anyone think this is a big deal?? The truck has little to no rust, it's an Arizona truck as has been it's whole life. He told me it is running right now, and he drives it every day, but that it hasn't been running as good lately as it used to. He said that on an off road trip he had an accident with the battery and when he was washing the engine he may have gotten water in the intake; however he still drives it everyday. He is asking 2000. I think the exterior is definitely worth it, but I'm just wondering what some of you more experienced owners think about his treatment of the truck and if it's worth it. I've seen trucks that look much worse than this one selling for 3500-4000, so I feel it is priced well, just don't want to make a bad purchase. Any input on this issue will be well appreciated. Also, I'm a long distance from this truck, so the only thing I'll have to judge by is the pictures and the sellers word. Thanks
If the body is in good shape.....that seems like a decent deal to me but let some other guys help you out. I bought a '76 4X4 4-speed from a guy almost five months ago and I have driven it a total of 50 miles since then. He said it ran well...which it seemed like it did. Tranny makes a lot of noise and wil need to be rebuilt. The cab is in decent condition but the bed of mine is rusted like crazy. My truck had 165,000 miles on it as a lawn mowing truck and it had been beat up. I paid $1000 for it and I've put about 4X that into it so far. It still won't run reliably yet. The old owner of mine seemed the same mentality and didn't know much about these old beasts. Anyway, If you can somehow confirm that the motor and tranny is solid and it doesn't leak out of every seal in the motor, etc. I would say go for it. But thats just my opinion. Can we see the pics so we can help you out?
