You can compare part numbers to see what will transfer between models. The main shaft is different 4x4 and 4x2, but I think it is the same across all engines. However, the input shaft is different for each engine family. The main housing is different due to the integrated bell housing, but I think the tail housings are the same across the engine families too. The superduties used an S5-47M - I don't know how much it shares with the older S5-47 used from '95-'96/'97.

You can find part number lists and exploded views here: ZF Friedrichshafen AG | Catalogs

I am picking up 2 diesel ZF5's this weekend for cheap that need some work. I would love a copy of that manual if you would be so inclined.

From one tinkerer to another, TIA!

Edit: is this the same one you have?

This came in handy for me to replace the 4th grear syncro in the s5-42 that I'm putting in my 68 F100.
If so I guess I have a copy now!

No, mine has my greezy fingerprints all over it. ;)

Mine's also got my notes written all over everything including pointing out
the wrong picture. Just double checked and yep, the mistake came from
ZF not from Ford, Ford just copied the mistake into their manual. LOL :)

Have fun with it while you got it apart fellow tinkerer, because pretty quick
it'll all be back together and the fun will be over. I 'member feeling exactly
that when I took this picture...

"fun's over :/"...

hello, ive got a zf5, but i know little about it. its very smooth shifter but it tends to jump out of gear occasionally in 4th and reverse is this a condition which will cause damage if not corrected? i want to fix it eventually but my superduty is my bread and beer winner so needless to say an extended stay on the rack is not doable.... whats yalls opinion?

All I did was replace the synchro rings in mine and that part works great. ;)

I didn't drive the '90 F250 parts truck very much and didn't know what to
look for so it acts a -little bit- like W's (below) because the synchro hubs'
teeth being worn round instead of sharp and pointy (like new).

Since then I bought new gears for it 2nd 3rd and Reverse (I have trouble
with 3rd and reverse) they come with the new synchro tooth ring attached.
Got new complete synchro hubs too.

I had the bearings but didn't install them figuring I was going to be taking
it apart again anyway, that was just a "test" for my own information. :)

1) Pops out of gear under power?
2) Pops out of gear when you let off the gas?
3) Pops out of gear right away as if you didn't get it into gear good enough?

#3 is how mine acts. :)

A little bit of fork wear plus a little bit of synchro hub tooth wear and they
add together = trouble.

I'm not a "transmission guy" (I'm a tinkerer ;) and as far as I know it don't
hurt nuthin' popping out of gear, just annoying sometimes. xD

yep # 3 describes mines problems to a tee, and its not really a problem but in my own mind i can hear ever bystander sayin " if ya cant find em grind em" when it pops out a in reverse and the tranny growls....

I concur with this. I had quite a bit of fork wear when I went through my 47. See the bad wear on the left side of this one. I bought three new forks on ebay to replace all mine.

The rebuild turned out fine for me. It definitely fixed the engagement problem I had with reverse. I haven't driven the truck much since then due to rebuilding the rear axle, and now have to work on fuel system problems that came about due to sitting for too long.

upon a recent zf install...

Hi, found this thread pretty helpful as I have just re-synchroed and installed a s542 in place of the M50D in my 96' 150. Hope its not too stale for posting.

Long story short, I am getting some bizarre noises only during hard decel(braking), not like anything mentioned anywhere else and I am wondering if anyone else can shed light on this. I'll save you all the details for now until someone is curious enough. I should note everything works really nice (400+ miles nice) and its not a gear noise so its a reallll head scratcher. Noise has been there since install. 300 6, New clutch kit, original t-case and no PTO usage. FTE TEAM, GO!
