I have a 1967 390 motor in my 1966 it currently has 3 on the colunm I was given a 4 speed top loader with the truck that came with the 1967 390. My questions: Want to switch to automatic c6 fe will work? What is a 4 speed top loader worth. Just bought the truck this weekend. Would like to change over transmission to automatic. Next question- has front drum brakes hard to change over disc and to power steering? Thanks for any help your willing to provide! Somewhat new to the forum.
The value of your Toploader is very dependent on where you are. Where I'm at in Boise, ID it would probably go for about $300-$400, but parts here are cheap and the people even cheaper half the time. I think a realistic value for that should be in the $500-$750 range, but that is also dependent on if it's a close or wide ratio box.
Do a search for the disc swap. It's been covered a few times here. It is very doable but more involved to do it the right way--think 73-79 parts truck involved.
Your best bet is to find and buy a 73-76 F100 donor with 360 engine and C6 transmission. You should have every part needed to upgrade your truck. I pulled my donor beside my truck, dropped the I-beams slid them over and bolted them under my 66. You will need the steering column to match the Saginaw gear, correct power steering pump and mounting bracket so chasing parts here and there is not a good option. When you get everything swapped you sell the donor and hopefully didn't spend a lot of money.
I want to buy parts where John is! That's a great deal for a Toploader!
If it were me, is be very tempted to try and make the Toploader work. Then again, this is coming from a guy that has one column study truck and one C6 auto truck... The grass is always greener...
I was hoping John would catch this thread. The bulk of my reading and knowledge on the disc swap and comes from his posts. You have a fantastic resource at your disposal with his past posts and him here as a reference.
