where would I find the code to see if a truck came stock with Dana 60 axles? Is it specific to a certain model (i.e. f250 4x4)? or is there a tell tale sign on the axle themselves?
Welcome to the site.
There are many ways to identify the axle that you have. Each axle has a BOM stamped on the axle tube. Often it requires a wire brush to scrape years of crud and old paint off.
A pic is worth a thousand words. NOt knowing what type of vehicle that you have makes it difficult to help answer your question. Unfortunately, axles can and are often changed over the years so what the truck came with from the fatory may not be what you actually have.
So many variations over the years makes this a bit of a tricky question.
This is where some pics would be helpfull.
Thank you for your help. I would post pictures but I don't actually have the truck yet. I am trying to convince my dad it would be worth the investment and I want to make a smart decision when buying a truck. I have one in mind and I have high hopes that I'll be buying it this week. is there anything else I should look for? problem areas?
Plenty to look out for. If you are looking at an F150, then you can count on the front axle being a dana 44 and it will have a 9 inch rear axle, unless it has been modified.
If you are looking at an F250, it too will more than likely have a dana 44 up front, and a dana 60 out back. Some renditions of the F250 would have had a low pinion dana 60 up front, but dont get too excited if you find one. These, while rare, have less than stellar desirability.
Only will you find a desirable front dana 60 in a 78/9 F250 with a snow fighter package, or an F350 4wd truck in the 79 model year only. Not easy to find, and they bring a decent chunk of change.
