360 Running Rough!

Hey there,

I'm on my second F-Series (1967 - 1972) with an FE Engine. I have a 1969 F-100 with a 360 and a C6. I purchased this truck, which I searched for over 20 years to find, and got it for almost nothing! I bought it with almost 110,000 miles on it and have put almost 25,000 miles on it since. The original owner never had the motor rebuilt, but did put a Holley Carb on it! I have a spare 360 in the Garage I've been building up, to keep it somewhat original, but I need to finish it.

Here's my problem...I was driving home from work, about 12 miles on the Southern California Freeway, and drove like I always do. My truck started to run rough once I hit the off-ramp! it seemed like there was a mis-fire, but no backfire and the engine was loping badly! I've changed the Fuel Pump, Plugs, Wires, Points, Condensor, Cap, Rotor, Coil and set the dwell and timing! I've also adjusted the Carburetor, but it still seems to be running very rough. I took the Valve Covers off to inspect the Valve Train, but did not see a Bent Push Rod or Sticking Valve! This is driving me nuts! In the past, when the engine ran rough like this, I would let it sit and cool down and the problem would go away!

Any Thoughts...PLEASE!

Check for vacume leaks. You can use a can of spray lube like WD40, spray around carb base and hoses, it should smooth a little when you get near the spot. Good Luck!!

try doing a compression and leakdown test.
try using one of those mechanics stethescopes and see if its making any funny noises anywhere.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will perform a Vacuum Leak Check tonight and do the Compression and Leakdown Test Tomorrow and post my findings! Thanks for your help!

I was told in might be the Carburetor...it's a Holley 2 BBL and I hate Holley Carbs! I wish Edelbrock made a 2 BBL, but, alas, I will have to find a Stock 2 BBL if that's the problem!

How about the timing chain/gear. A lot of those engines had nylon coated gears and eventually the nylon gives way and the aluminum underneath will still turn the chain, but the valve timing will be off. Check the vacuum advance canister for leaks. Check that the rocker arms are getting oil. It is possible for the oil filter to clog and starve the lifters enough so that they still work but the valves won't have their full stroke and you get very little lifter noise. The clogged filter will cause very low oil pressure also.
