I have a 74 360 in my 77 f150 4x4 w/4spd. when it gets warm(driven for 30 min or so) My oil press. at idle is about 10psi,I know in theory that is ok.It dosent bother me.My question is while driving under almost no throttle load the valves clatter.give it gas and it goes away, let off completely it goes away. at idle warm or cold it is quiet.I am not a newbe to these trucks but engine internals is not my strong suit.FYI it prob has about 85,000 orig miles on engine.I have used the search function but did not find a awnser to my particular question. thanks chris
Are you sure it's not pinging? Disconnect & plug the vacuum advance line to the distributor and see if the noise goes away- might just have too much advance under light throttle, line might be connected to the wrong port, etc.
i will tripple check the timing and vacume. timing set to 8 deg.
Re-read my post- that's not what I said. By disabling the vacuum advance, you can confirm or rule out that too much part-throttle vacuum advance might be making it ping- as you said, when you give it more throttle, which should also reduce the vacuum advance if things are working right, the noise goes away
IMHO, It is much more worthy to be concerned about the level of the oil on the stick than the amount of pressure on the gauge.
These ol guys can run some pretty weak pressure when the inside gets tired.

That was my thinking.I have had and seen 351m/400 idle at 0 and have 10-15 at speed. they kept plugging away for years.
mine is full of oil,it was the "sudden" drop that had me concerned.
What gets me is this motor only has 90,xxx miles.
I think volume and flow is more important then pressure. None of my 360's or 351's or even the 460 have had much pressure, mind you I'm reading the factory gauge which isnt incremented in psi. Cold, the needle would be in the middle, as soon as they warmed up maybe 1/4 of the gauge, in some cases less.
Also, I have yet too hear a 360 that didnt sound like it had a lifter tapping but by the time I or my friends got them they had 80,000+ miles on them.
I'm in agreement with MeanGene on his recommendation. Also, make sure your running at least 6 quarts total in the oil system (that would be 5 quarts in the pan and one in the quart). I also would try a little more initial timing than what your running.
well after playing with this thing for almost a month on and off,I think I have found the problem.First the oil pressure issue,I did a oil change and went from shell 20w50 to valvoline vr1 20w50 WOW what a difference! 60psi cold and 30 psi hot at idle. Still was hunting down the "ticking" well I tried moving vac ports and advancing and retarding timing(points dist) also replaced and adjusted points and condenser, still doing it. took dizzy apart--- found a broken spring in the advance mech. got sick of messing with it and ordered a new dura spark distributer..I will put it in on sat and reconnect all my dura spark wiring I wasent using at the moment.( had a duraspark dizzy in it for years and it went bad,$ did not permit a new one at the time so I droped in my old points setup)
so hopefully this will solve my problem.
