I've looked through alot of threads but couldn't find the answer to this question....
Is there anything besides the VSS, cable or PSOM that would make your speedometer stop working? Would a bad MLPS cause it to go out?? This is on a 1990 f350 7.5l truck.
You don't have a PSOM, and the only thing your VSS runs is the RABS system. Your MLPS has nothing to do with the speedometer.
Your problem is somewhere along the cable that runs from the tranny tailshaft (or transfer case) to the back of the gauge cluster. Sometimes the plastic speedometer gear breaks, that's probably the most common cause. If you've had the cluster off recently maybe you didn't get the cable on all the way.

Thanks for the reply, I haven't touched the gauge or dash at all. I recently did a tranny swap and it hasn't worked since. The rebuilt tranny came with a VSS and MLSP, today I tried to switch my VSS but the one I received from NAPA seemed like it was for a differerent year or truck (guy at the parts counter said there is only one part number for 88 through to 97. The diameter was larger and there was no speedometer pinion gear on the end, I'm thinking maybe it was for a 4X4 or trucks with the VSS in the rear axle...have any ideas?
Oh yeah one thing i noticed is when I disconnect the speedo cable from thhe VSS there is only about 1/4" of cable sticking out...does that sound normal?
It seems that parts stores always give you the wrong VSS. There are two, one in the tranny or transfer case, and another the rear axle. They don't look the same at all. To be honest I'm not sure how much cable should be sticking out. I would probably put it up on good jackstands (and point it away from expensive stuff), start it up and put it in gear. You should be able to figure out where the break is pretty easily that way.

I have the infamous E4OD, and my VSS is on the tranny. I don't have jackstands so that's out... I'll check the back of my gauge cluster (hopefully that fixes the trouble)and try the dealer for the right VSS. Thanks for your help I'll post back and let you know how it goes.
If you or anyone else by any chance knows the correct part number for the VSS please post it up....Thanks
I installed the proper VSS from the dealer a few days ago and took the truck out today after finishing off another repair. She ran properly for the first time in weeks. Everything's coming together...side note I didn't realize the new VSS doesn't come with a new speedo pinion gear....
