Dead Speedometer

94 PS 4WD 5sp speedometer started shutting off about a year ago every now and then. If cruise cont. was on it would fall off also. Recently the speedometer quit totally. Have check plug in behind panel and it is good. Checked fuses I think and all appear to be good. Sure appears like a connection loose somewhere. Help! Where to look or what to do.

On top of the read differential there is a small device called a VSS (Variable Speed Sensor). It feeds the speedo. About a $20 part at Ford (Autozone and the like have it for around $40).

Thanks Mike, Picked up the sensor at Ford tonight, put it in and presto, speedometer back in action.

Yeah three things on these trucks famous for going out. The VSS, the CPS, and the water pump, oh and the Super duties also add the door locks

Hi MJWHIP,
Read your comment on the non working speedo and wondered if this rear end switch that feeds the speedo would account for a non working speedo but a functioning odometer and trip? My odometer works but the speedo quit dead. I have a '99 Ford one ton chassis on a motorhome and have the rear end switch but also have a similar switch on the driver side of the transmission..which one feeds what...thanks for any input.........
