Tow mirror skin replace

I have a 2002 F250 Super Duty with the tow mirrors. Everything works great but the mirror skins are all ground up. I have heard that you can replace just the outside skin. Is this true? If so, how do you get the skin off. If this is possible, I was thinking of replacing mine with an 2003 skin with the lights in it. Anyone hear of this or do it?

I had to change one of mine on my '05 SD after my wife broke the blinker going through a drive through. Its not hard to do, I took no mercy getting the old one off as I intended to throw it out anyway. The new one just snaps on. I doubt if you can go to one with the lights in it unless you have a power source there already or are thinking of pulling the necessary wires.
BTE, the new skin for mine with the LED blinker ran almost $100 for one....... 3 years ago .

Thanks for the info. Bilter. I did plan on making my own wire harness for the turn signals. Not sure if I want the parking lights funtional yet. The price of a skin is a lot cheaper than buying a newer model mirror. I was looking for a little more detailed info. on how to get it off. I know how to get the mirror off of the door but not sure what needs to be done to get the skin off.

I would be interested in knowing how to pull to skins off too. I have an 02 SD and would also like to replace the skins with illuminated skins. I'll run the wiring.

Pulling the skin off is really simple. You just have to be patient and careful. There are several plastic tabs that hold it on...if you break one, your skin won't fit back on snugly.

To remove the back skin, adjust the mirror all the way in...towards the door window. Take a flashlight and look between the mirror glass and the inside of the back skin...you'll see the tabs I'm talking about. I would suggest using a headlamp on a band around your head...that way both hands are free. Insert a flathead screw driver and CAREFULLY pry up on the latch head...pry up too far and you'll break that tab right off. Once you get the first one to unlatch, move to the next one and repeat the process until they're all unlatched. Then simply pull the skin off from the outside of the mirror. For those of you who already have lights on the tow mirror, you'll need to disconnect the small wiring harness to complete the removal.

To reinstall, simply line everything back up and snap the back into place.

its alot easier to show than explain. if you tilt the glass one way or the other get a light and look in between the glass and the plastic there are small tabs that snap in to hold it on. a long small screwdriver is best to lightly pry on the tabs. take your time
