transmission flush questions?

My truck has 140k on it and I want to do a transmission flush and have a few questions:

-what transmission does a 2000 PSD have? I think it's a 4R100?
-if I don't drop the pan to replace the filter, it looks like I just flush from the trans cooler?
-where is the trans cooler located?

Wink

First off, IF it is unknown as to when last the fluid and filter were changed then I absolutely would not flush it!!
Your truck may have the torque converter drain.....I would highly recomend just getting the engine/trans warm then draining the pan, and converter, clean the pan well, change the filter and put about 1/2 the fluid (I recomend Mercon V) and run engine about a minute then put in the rest, as always check for leaks, and test drive then check fluid again on level ground with engine running.
Flushing has been known to cause problems with a high mile trans as particles of stuff can be dislogged and get where they don't need to be.

You do have a converter drain..(Ford stopped using them after Aug 2001).. but you can also disconnect the transmission cooler line at the back of the trans as described in step #4 of the link instructions in the #2 post above to drain the torque conv..
I agree with Supercab.. i wouldn't flush either.

I would do a complete change with Merc V using the link above. It says in there not to use Merc V, but that was written before Ford released a TSB OK'ing it in our transmissions. The Merc V specs were changed allowing its use in the 4r100.

I read that article again. From what you guys are telling me, I should just drain the fluid and refill? No sense to drop the pan?

No. I would drain the pan, drop it, change the filter, re-install the pan, fill with fluid, and continue with the steps in the procedure above. No need to drain the converter -- the procedure above changes all the fluid.

What are your thoughts on the DieselSite transmission filter? I've read mixed reviews on it.

I wouldn't bother. Maybe on a brand new rebuild, but not on a "seasoned" one. LOL

lol, fair enough.

btw, I had my terminology mixed up with a "trans flush" vs just a "fluid change".

Fluid Swap

I did two of these swaps a few weeks ago, one a 99.5 with 225k that hadn't been changed in over a 100k, and one on my 2001 with 120k that I have no idea if it was ever done. just used factory filters, reused the pan gasket, quick and easy job. Both are running nicely after.

ONE NOTE: When you pull the filter down, the little red/pink gasket that was on it will most likely be stuck up in the tranny, be sure to pull it out with a small screw driver or whatever before putting the new filter in.

Don't forget to clean the pan & magnet in the bottom. I use brake cleaner. And don't freak out when you see a lot of scuzz on the magnet. That's what it's there for. As long as there aren't any huge chunks of metal, you'll be fine.

Filter/Oil

If you look at the link to the procedure, you will see you will need clear 3/8 tubing, roughly 5 gallons of tranny fluid, then the filter. The swap pushed all the old fluid out the tubing returning from the tranny cooler, very slick swap.

I just gave the ford parts guy my vin and he gave me the correct filter, not sure on NAPA.
