So Mark, where would you suggest I look to see if the cooler line is plugged, start at the radiator? I'll check the lines to see if I have a crimp but would think if it's plugged or restricted its in the core?? Pls email me at bearscat@live.com.
It could be anywhere in the line or in the in the radiator cooler or in the air to oil cooler. Or it could be several of them, or all of them. It's impossible to predict.
I'm debating whether to flush or just drain pan and converter. Btw, according to my VIN, I have the e40D transmission.
I've read here and other places not to flush the system if it has high mileage, but what is considered high mileage? Is it 50K, 75K or 100K. I have a 2001 that has 97K on it and according to the national average of miles driven per year that's low mileage for a 10 year old vehicle.
Anyway, I've changed the filter and fluid twice since purchasing the truck in Dec. 2000. So how much fluid (approx.) is removed between the pan and torque converter? Also, I will assume that synthetic fluid is the way to go.
Btw, according to my VIN, I have the e40D transmission.
How would you determine that from the VIN? Transmission information is not included in the VIN.
Also, 1998 was the last year for the E4OD. After that Ford upgraded the trans and renamed it 4R100.

I've read that, too. I don't believe it. New fluid is ALWAYS better than old fluid. Using flushing chemicals is a different story. That CAN hurt your trans.

About 90% is removed between the pan and the torque converter. I also assume that synthetic is the better way to go. I like Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.
I asked a gentleman in the Ford parts department how to determine which transmission I had and he said to give him the VIN; from that he said it was the e40D, but I called him back and told him that the owners manual does not show a E40D but it has the 4R100 for the 4x4. He then said they are the same and to use Mercon V. So to be on the safe side I just picked up Mobil 1.
Thanks for the info and clarification on the transmission.
