Im doing a coolant flush soon and i want to try not to clog the oil cooler. First question is should i use the restore/restore plus or is it safer to just flush everything with distilled water until clear than add the ELC? Secondly i have heard some people installing the coolant filter before the flush. Would this help eliminate clogging the cooler? Thanks
Do you know your eot and ect's?? If they were good I would just run distilled water through it to flush. It will take many times of flushing. As for the filter I wouldnt put it on before because it would be just that more flushing to get all the old coolant out. Even if you put it on before it would not filter all the water in the flushing process.
I would pull your thermostat. Run about 3 or 4 flushes with distilled water or until clean. Put your new thermostat in install your filter add new coolant call it good.
Some info to consider:
If you go to any coolant manufacturer/retailer's website (including Ford) you will find a chemical flush is recommended for a coolant system service. Reason being, water alone won't remove the corrosion and residual spent chemicals of the previous coolant additive package. It's even more important when changing types of coolant like going from Ford Gold to a silicate free ELC for example. If you going back with the same coolant the issue is smaller but when changing types of coolant some of the chemicals are expressly "incompatible". Cleaning the surface of the coolant passages also allow the fresh additives to work properly.
Admittedly, this is general info, and there are other specific issues to consider with a 6.0, like all the junk coming loose and clogging the oil cooler. Using chemicals makes a relatively easy /quick job a lot more time consuming also as the block plugs must come out. It's a gamble to be sure and I will say you truck isn't going to blow up if you don't flush it with chemicals but I just wanted you to know there's more to it than "it's not required".
On the filter you can do however makes sense to you. If you do install it first just be sure to replace the filter again just before you put your new coolant in.
