Check engine codes - need interpretation???

Hi - I have a 1997 Ford F-350 diesel Crew Cab 220,000 miles. I use this as my work vehicle and go throughout the Midwest with it.

This past week, I was in Indiana and had some trouble. It happened 3 or 4 times, and each time within 1 minute of startup. Suddenly the idle would change noticeably (sounded like it was missing) and the check engine light would come on. When this happened, I would pull into a parking lot, rev it a little, and then turn the key off. I would then re-start it, she would run well, and the check engine light would not come back on. Each time the problem happened, it would be the first start of the morning. I drove back 500 miles to Wisconsin without a problem.

I took my truck down today and got the codes read -two codes came up and here is what the mechanic wrote down: P0344 Camshaft post. Circuit and P1211 Injector Control Pressure High/Low. He thought I might have an issue with my CPS and that this might be triggering the Injector code - does this seem reasonable to you all and sound consistent with my issue? He kept his code reader hooked up and started the truck and reported oil pressure of 580 psi - he said anything over 500 was good. He suggested I get the CPS replaced and said my problems should be fixed.

I try to keep this truck working well because a breakdown far from home can be very expensive for me. Should I just replace the CPS and hope for the best or does anyone out there have a different idea of what the problem could be?

Thanks for the help - great site!

If you didn't do the RECALL for the CPS, I would go to Ford and have them do the recall if they would give me back the orignal black one. That would be a good place to start, they are not expensive like they used to be.

Yes, by all means replace the CPS first. If you're no longer eligible for the recall, they only cost around $25 anyway.

Do you have a chip in your truck? That might account for the P1211. If you've got 580 psi at idle then you're doing great there.
