Maybe I am missing something myself, but I think there is a little confusion here. There is no bearing, that holds the axleshaft on the axle tube side. The only thing on the axle tube side that holds the axleshaft, is the spider gear in the differential, and the inner axle seal. The inner axle seal doesnt really support anything, the axleshaft just goes through it. The knuckle side, is what holds and aligns the axle assembly. (both sides) It goes through a dust seal, the inner axle bearing, often refered to as "needle bearings", and then goes into the actual locking hub. Since you said you replaced the unit beaing, you would have also replaced the needle bearings, because they are on the back, inner side, of the unit bearing. Something you can try, thats really quick and easy, is swapping your hubs, from left to right, and seeing if the looseness follows. Other then that, your probably looking at the dust seal, as it does actually offer support. While you have it apart, look at your stub shaft for excessive wear, if it has gotten warn down, all the new parts around it will not fix the problem. So start by swapping the locking hubs, and let us know. Good luck!
Read all this. Start with the locking hubs, and then you probably are going to have to look at the axleshaft for wear, then while you have it apart, look at the dust seal.
ok so i pulled the entire hub off the needle bearing that supports the short shaft is frozen and wont roll a budge i just replaced that one 6 months ago...... the one i tookoff the driver side yesterday is decent but still real bad. the short shaft has alot of ware and score marks on it aswell..... as for the dust seal hahha its shot too. i noticed befor i took it off that when the tire was spun thet the axel shaft dident move... but their is so much play thay when you hit a bump it locks in for a sec and grinds really bad... anyway just for temp so i can get it to a shop can i take out the locking hub and drive it like that????? will it hurt anything???? because i spun the tire with it out and everything looked to be ok just wondering

You work fast. You can get replacement needle bearings from NAPA. When you go to get them, they are called "Inner Axle Bearings". They are about $10 each. Since you have them apart do both sides. Make sure you cover them in grease!!! At this point, you should do the dust seals, then put the inner axle bearings in, and then put your hubs back in. I am willing to bet, you will be in great shape at that point. The reason your recently installed bearings are toast, is more then likely the lack of dust seal as you said. If dust gets by, so does the water. You CAN drive with the locking hubs removed. Just cover the hub with duct tape, or similar. To keep dirt/grime etc out. I would be leary of reusing your axleshaft, if its as worn as you say. Can you get a picture on here? Showing the damage?
