Driving to go wheel a get about 100 miles from home and the truck starts spittin and sputtering... black smoke out the tail pipe--- mostly when I let off the gas... I think "A HA" Fuel presure regulator (been down that road before) Pull the codes and get a 111 and a 181 (Lean fuel in bank one.) So we get on the trusty phone/net we locate one, and get it installed. Clear the codes and reset the ecm. Drive all day wheelling no problems drive 30 miles at highway speeds to a resturaunt no problem.. head home--108 miles down the road same thing spit spit sputter-- I limp the last 20 miles home and in town it is really bad-- barely runs at all. Now I just replaced the Fuel pressure regulator in Feb-- now this one went bad after 130 miles?
Any one have a clue whats going on? Could possibly be another bad regulator but the odds are looking like it is something else? Last August I had the return line come off of the tank-- Related????
I don't know much about EFI systems, but could the pump or system be overpressurizing or could your return line be plugged causing the regulator to blow after a point because of back pressure on the low pressure side?
Garbage in the fuel system? Might drop the tank and clean it. Change fuel filter. Sea foam? I think there was some folks over on Ricks board with a tech procedure about the best way to use it so you clean everything. That might have been for the second gen though. Did ya change to the other tank? Bad injectors?
I put a bottle of cleaner in the tank every oil change. Might try BG stuff I have used it before.
Green does the caustic vapor smell if I push it hard and it's warm about like that.
Is that my code reader giving those codes? Does it have codes now? Might try a bigger/different code reader.
Cam Position Sensor? I had one of those bad. Is it better now that it cooled down?
I was thinkin about that today, about the only thing I could come up with is an O2 sensor problem. The only reason I say that is that the only code that came up is for bank 1 at maximum fuel trim and still running lean, it didn't set a code for bank 2. Also the problem wasn't consistent. If it were me, I would get ahold of Lynn and see if he can bring his MODIS by the shop, we can put a fuel pressure guage on it and throw it on the dyno and run it and see what is going on with fuel trims and O2 switching. Lynn might have a good idea or 2 also, he is very sharp when it comes to this kind of thing.
Jack did bring up a good point, when did all this start and what work was done prior to it acting up?? Clint mentioned you had the same problem once when you went up to your dads house.
