Electrical problem

We just bought an 85 f 350 with the 6.9, I went to move it this morning and it started fine but about 5 seconds after starting it just shut off. I figured the engine had just died so I went to restart it but I didnt have any electrial power. No glow plugs (which is rigged up on a relay switch), no starter, no lights, no cab light, basicly no power at all. I checked fuses and found on 15Amp fuse that was blown, I replaced it and still have nothing. I checked the rest of the fuses and they appear to be ok. Is there a master fuse some where that I may have over looked? The other thing I was kind of wondering is, is it possible that the key switch is faulty? Any other ideas? Thanks for any help.

I would advise check the wiring through the large black connector at the rear of the right inner fender to engine. Look for burnt or melted connector.... just remove the wires from the connector and solder them together. Now if yours has the grey connector with the yellow wires do the same.

+1

Inspect and pull apart every connector you can find in that area. Anything that is corroded, burnt or won't pull apart easily can be considered suspect. In particular, look for this connector:

The connector I'm showing there was was so bad it had melted together and had to be bypassed completely. Same deal though, complete power failure to the cab. Came really close to leaving me stranded......

Ok I looked a the truck again today, I couldn't find the exact connector you guys posted a picture of. I saw this connector, I would have broken off the little hooks that hold the plug tougher if I tried pulling it apart so I figured I would make sure it was the correct plug before I pulled it apart.

If it has 2 large black wires that change to 2 large yellow wires that should be the one........

That is the engine to chassis harness connector.

The one in David85's picture is closer to the fender and slightly forward of the one in your picture.

That is the glow plug relay and voltage regulator in the backround in his pictures.
The yellow wire is cab power.
So when it goes you are right much dead in the water.

There are a few extra items in that picture, but you can get a relation to your connector since you can see both.

Figured it out, I couldn't find the connector because somebody had already cut it out. Thanks to Dave Sponaugle's picture I figured it out. I cut out the old splice and put in a new connector on the yellow and green wires. Im not really sure what was wrong with the old splice because the wires were still making good contact, oh well its fixed now. Thanks for the pictures and help guys!

Man that is funny.

Looks like you have exactly the same voltage regulator as my picture.
Someone with problems posted that picture and I saved it to show where stuff was, I have no idea who the original poster was.

Glad you are on the road again.
