I have a 1995 E-350 that badly needs a tachometer. I have been unable to find a factory cluster with the tachometer. I don't have a F series cluster handy to compare, but the individual gauges look identical in pictures. I can probably find an F series cluster with a tach. Does anyone know if this kind of swap is possible? Also, if I am forced to go with an aftermarket tach, where can I find a tach signal on this unit (E-350 - 460 - gas EEC-IV - 1995)?? Thanks in advance for anyone's help!!
The after market tach would hook on to the tach (-) side of the Ignition coil.
They did not run a wire from the coil to the cluster on the E-series.
The F-series cluster does not have the instrument cluster gauge amplifier that is on the E-series cluster. It provides a delay to the fuel gauge to prevent the fuel gauge pointer from fluctuating as a result of excessive movement in the fuel tank. The module is a small printed circuit board which latches into a pocket on the back of the instrument cluster.
I think you will need to go with an after market tach.
Thanks so much for the info. Two dumb questions:
1) If there was no tach signal available up in the instrument panel, how did the factory tach (it was an option) work??
2) The coil on this motor is not the old conventional looking round one. It is a large square looking thing bolted to the top rear of the left valve cover. I can barely see it - how do I identify which wire would work for a tach signal?

As far as I know it was NOT an option on the E-series.

It is a Tan wire with a yellow stripe running from the coil to the Ignition Control Module (ICM) also called the TFI Module. You can pick it up at either end or splice into it in the middle someplace. The wire goes no place else. It also passes through connector C121.
C121 is located in front of engine, behind cooling fan, it is the engine disconnect plug.
Just the info I need - thanks. BTW - I have the original owners manual and it has a picture and description of the panel with the tach as well as the one without, which is what started me off on this tangent in the first place!!!

I do not have the 1995 owners manual but just went through the 1996 E-350 owners manual and it does not show a image of a tach any place in it.
I just got a F-series cluster with tach today(thanks to cash 4 clunkers, ruined a exelent shape 94 f150) That I will be adapting into my 95 E350 bus conversion. You will have to change out wires on the plugs so the new dash will work. I have some wireing diagrams and just verified which ones need swapping.
Like Subford said, most E vans probly won't have the tach in the loom so you will have to run one. The anti-slosh modual is not nessary if you don't mind the wandering guage while stopping, but I will figure that out on my swap. I will be swapping out the PSOM(speedometer) to keep my milage and ratio factor correct. Those are the same from the wireing diagrams show.
I would love to put a F-series with tach cluster in my 1994 F53 motorhome but the F-series clusters do not have the eight screw holes to mount the cluster to the dash cover.
Thanks to both of you for the help. Just so you don't think I'm crazy (like my wife), I'll offer to send scans of my owners manual to anyone that curious. I would include them here, but am not sure how to do so. I'll keep looking for an F series dash since it appears doable if I want to put that much effort into it. Otherwise, I'll see what aftermarket unit might fit well. It's hard to find units with less than 8 or 10 k total sweep, which my motorhome doesn't exactly need. Thanks - everyone - for your help...
Ok, Bill you got me intrested, here's some photos of that 94 F150 cluster I got today.
Front of cluster, looks like some of the screws will match yours! if not there's enough plastic to make up some screw holes. I think you have no probs swapping over.
Rear of it
The dash of my bus a 95 E250 but titled as a 96 bus but going to become a RV.
Here's what I got. its dark but I am supprised the ole crappy camera worked!
I have a spare F-series cluster and took the dash apart and looked at the two clusters and it looked no go so I put it back the way it was.
I think I am going to cut a hold above the speedometer and put a after market tach with a transmission temp gauge on one side and a fuel pressure or vacuum gauge on the other side of the tach.
Ah, I see now, your cluster is flat to fit the dash, still possable as your dash is a total custom design probly with lots of space behind it. I junked out a old Brougham cheby chassis motorhome and had the same flat dash design, I could see how they modified the cluster to make it flushmount to the plexy.
If you look on the left side just behind the steering wheel I have a vac guage in the panel. Its one of those $20 Harbor Freight guages, looks and works good execpt the wheel is in the way.....
Got it working, just changed a few wires around on the connectors(I got the connectors with about 5" of wire) by matching up the color coded wires. You will have to add the tach wire as it's not in the loom for the e-series van.
Bill, that black bezel will come off and that will alow the cluster to be flat mounted(with stand offs for clearance). You may have a diffrent year range cluster. I think 92 to 95 clusters are all same mounting.
