Ok, so I noticed that the truck started shifting hard from 3rd to 4th gear and then the OD light started blinking. Pulled some codes with my programmer and got a "3-4 shift malfunction" and "overtemperature condition".
Now for the wierd part. This has now happened about 3 times, and each time, the next time I use the truck, the light is no longer blinking (eventhough I don't clear the codes) and the shifting is normal for about 1 1/2 weeks and then it happens all over again.
The tranny fluid looks as good as new. So what gives? If it were a real problem, would it just go away for a while and come back like that? Truck has 97k on it, but tranny was rebuilt/upgraded by the previous owner at 77K, so it only has 20K on it.
Check the wiring for the OD button inside the steering column.
They get chafed and then start to short out and you get trouble like you are going through.
No, it won't cause the harsh shift or the over temperature code. Those show that there is something wrong inside the trans.
When the key is off the flashing OD light will shut off. It will not come on again until the PCM detects the fault again. I think whatever is wrong with yours isn't bad enough yet to always set the code.
The first thing to determine is if the trans is really over temperature. Do you have a gauge? If the temperature sensor in the trans fails it can cause an over temp code.
Just ordered the DieselManor 3 gauge setup. Should I set it back to "stock" with my programmer (SuperChips) until I get the gauges installed? Right now its on "Race/Performance" mode (which is what it was set on when I bought it).
Ok, so driving home, all of a sudden, the truck would not shift up (so I was moving about 20 mph and couldn't get it to go any faster)...just would rev and no power to the wheels. I pulled over and turned it off. Pulled a P1744 code (Torque Converter Clutch SYstem Performance) from my programmer. Tried to start it back up, and the truck would not start....what the heck!!!
It would turn over just fine, but would not fire up. Got towed home and changed the CPS (had a new one waiting)...took 3 tries for it to start, but finally did. Went for a drive around the block, and I get power through probably first and second gear, and then it will just rev and coast to a stop....won't move at that point if I try to take off again. Turn it off and back on, and it will repeat....first, second, and then no more shifting/power.
Any ideas? Torque Converter gone? Why would it not restart after the original problem?????
I can't see how it could be a torque converter. The converter doesn't know what gear the trans is in. It either works all the time or it doesn't work at all.
Could a fuel delivery issue cause hard shifting and a lag when going into reverse? These are some of the original symptoms I've experienced over the past few weeks intermittently before today's major issue.
