I have searched through other posts and after 8 pages, only found 1 post with a similar problem, but different truck.
I have an 03 F-250 7.3L turbo diesel, FX4. Not sure which tranny I have (can someone tell me how to find out?) but sometimes, rather randomly, my tranny will shift hard and then the OD light starts blinking. It doesn't happen all the time, mostly if I am in stop/go traffic and I let off the pedal as it's getting ready to shift. I have an after-market chip in it and used to it shifting harder than normal, but the OD light blinking doesn't happen all the time.
I have been looking into changing the fluid as I have never done it, and there's 270k miles on it. I read in another article that Ford doesn't recommend replacing the filter, but I thought about it cuz of the miles.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This is my daily driver for now (has been for a long time) and I can't afford to be stranded on the freeway with my 2 little boys. I am looking for a small car for work, but I would still use this, as I have horses and such.
The first question is easy. You have a 4R100 transmission. Be careful with your research that you don't take advice for a 5R110 Torqshift and use it on your 4R100.
Maybe you should disconnect the chip and see if the shifting is acceptable.
The OD light flashing is telling you there is a fault code on the tranny. Sometimes it is simply too hot. But it could be any number of things. A shop can read that code for you.
Sorry I am not expert enough to diagnose the problem. You have beaten the odds with 270k on the tranny. I hope you have been keeping the service up to date.
I can't diagnose what's wrong without knowing what code is stored in the PCM. The auto parts stores that read codes free will not be able to read the codes that you need.

How is that an easy question, lol...I wouldn't even know where to begin looking. Thank you for the advice.
I have had the chip for about 6 years now, but it's only been doing this recently. I had always wondered why the OD light flashed, I never found that info anywhere before. I will look into a shop that can read the codes for me. Are they usually something simple or serious?
I haven't been as diligent with the tranny service as I should be...

Thank you Mark, I will post the codes as soon as I can get them read. Are they usually simple or serious reasons????
