Anyone got any homemade tools for specific jobs they have made? I recently made a magnetic deck bridge. BTW the piston is .012" down the hole which will be remedied soon.
how do you know you got it that accurate?! lol i havent made anything like that... best i got is an old heavy duty leaf spring i cut in half to use as a flat pry bar!
I have made tons of job specific tools over the years. Lots of "special" hydraulic gauges.
Looks like a neat tool you made Nathan, and Im a fan of princess auto myself, but to get specific measurements like that, i would probably get yourself a little bit better quality of a gauge.
The princess auto measuring tools are actually pretty good. Measuring tools aren't rocket science as it relatively simple affair with standardized gears or threads. Now if you need to measure down to .0001 of an inch then your gonna need the $500 Starrett one. They can't be too bad if Siast uses princess auto micrometers and vernier calipers.
Kirk you set it first on a level surface and then zero the guage out. Mount it on the cylinder block and how far away from zero is the piston down the bore. I just also had to factor in the surface on the piston I was measuring was .125" lower.
We have made things like pullers.etc for the odd job, a 'dolly' to remove semi tires/hubs, quite an assortment of bent/cut wrenches, a big press using a tractor w/forklift tines, our floor hoist, and a beam with hydraulic jack to take apart the bearings on our packers on the air drill.
Heres a couple my dad has made over the years
Hyd press 30 ton I believe but capable of handling a 50 ton if it had a larger cylinder
This is what we call "The crane" it gives the tractor 12 feet of extra reach and/or holds objects further away from hitting the tractor. We have carried old 12 foot one way discs attached from it hasn't broke yet. (AND ALSO my dad built the front end loader on the tractor also)
Home built aurger mover. Has gone through trial and error but has been perfected, been on the farm for about 30 years now. lol It runs off of the bin sweep system
Dad made several when he was still twisting wrenches. Over the years he made a hydraulic press, shop crane, mechanical rotating engine stand, wheel dollies, etc. The two biggest ones were a pair of service trucks he built. One had a service body, with complete tool set, air, welder, and interior work space. We sold it in '01 at auction. The other has a flatbed deck with a hydraulic 180 degree movement crane mounted behind the cab. I don't know the exact lifting strength, but I've seen it pick up a 1977 Ford LTD. I'll take a picture or two of it next time I'm at the farm. Or if anyone is has some of the Prairie Farm Report videos, dad was featured on it around '88 or so. I looked quickly at the PFR website, and I think he's on the Inventions I dvd.
that and they are stupid cheap to buld,
hydralic pump from any old farm truck
electric motor (anyhting less then 1hp
valve, hoses, and cylinder 2 inch shaft or bigger
then just a I beam with 3/8-1/2 inch structural steel
