To expand on what volvo said, I know someone who rear ended someone else because they used their train horn at a rail road crossing and the person slammed on their brakes and he ended up hitting them. They stopped because they thought a train was actually coming.
my buddy at the local train yard got a horn off of an alco tender for me. uses half inch airline and a 25gallon air tank in the tool box to run.
its really really loud. mounted it on the frame rail between the bed and the frame because its 2.5 ft long and has 4 horns and had to rig up an electric solinoid to run it. you cannot see the horn at all.......sneaky like i wanted it to be....made a jogger fall over in the ditch one day when i he was jogging down the middle of a 4 land road like a jerk.
i realize its illegal thats why i am very careful where and when i use it.......but i like having it when i need it. wakes up sleepy truck drivers too......
I haven't found the right set yet. I want one that so loud and produce such a low resonance that if I blow them behind that person doing 25 in the 45 or 60mph zone, their heart explodes just after their bowels release.
There is a truck at my local shop that just had a custom rack built for 8" KC lights and Train Horns to be attached to the top of a F-250. The guys at the shop where telling you could hear him coming a mile away. He purchased his from some Train yard not sure where though but these thing are huge on top of the truck.
I have 2 sets connected in my truck that were purchased from siege engineering... they make the best of the best, and once you understand the connection its a very simple instillation... they are pricey for nice ones, i paid 200-300 for each set of horns plus the 300 dollar compressor...
prices dropped significantly now... but definately check siege engineering!
Just a helpful tip: if mounting underneath your truck, face the horns backward to reduce the ammount of dirt that enters the horns... and dont worry, it doesnt reduce the volume even remotely
Oh, and i like them better underneath because they are illegal to use in most states so you can easily keep them out of view to avoid tickets, plus i have friends who mounted them on the roofs and they were stolen... so remember, outta sight, outta mind!
i just recieved and installed mine from hornblasters.... i got a 150PSI 2.5 gal one. it depends how deep your pockets are for a horn, they range from $250-$2500. but they are LOUD. i live about 2 miles from a friend and he can hear mine if im in the driveway and hes standing outside lol
I run a train museum and do a lot of work with train horns obviously. If there is one recommendation I can make it is to spend the extra money and go with a 5 chime horn instead of just the 3 chime. The tone quality is so much better and will sound more like a train than a truck horn. Good luck getting a compressor big enough to power it though.
