5.4 Pinging

I have an 99 EB 60k miles with a 5.4 that pings with normal driving 70+ MPH. No chech engine light or anything else. I have tried all different kinds of gas and even 104+ once. Nothing effects it. If I tow my pop-up it gets a little worse but not much. I has been doing this for a while.
Anyone have this problem or know what it might be? Thought it may be the knock sensor but I can't find anything telling ho to test it. Haynes manual says the dealer can hook it up to the computer and drive it around to monitor the sensor. Don't know how much his would cost.

Thanks in advance,

Bob

If the check engine light isn't on, will it do any good? I guess the dealer could hook it up and drive it around. I don't know if normal garages can do that or not.

I also have a 99 EB 2wd with 79K miles and I have pinging since day one. I think higher octane gas helped a little but the pinging is still there but not as obvious. With the music on I can hardy hear it.
I also have the head gasket leak and the piston slap (only when it is very cold). My plan is to get 100K out of it and then get a new one. I hope I will have a better luck on the next one.

I just got my 98 5.4 back from the shop. I searched for a real mechanic (drag racer). He found a vacuum leak on the rear of the manifold, fuel filter in need of replacement, and plugs that said the engine was running lean. I have only driven it home from his shop but, so far, it seems to have fixed the ping and the miss. Holding breath....

You mention the piston slap and the head gasket leak as "a matter of fact" type of statement. I am relatively new to this board so I have not read all the messages. What are you referencing with those two issues. Are they something I should be watching? I think I know about the piston slap (knocking noise when cold) but was not aware other people had the same problems (been doing it since new) so if there is any more info about it I'd like to hear it. Same for the head gasket leak. We have 88K on our '98 and I'd like to put another 100K on it (not paid off yet!)

Gravesgrg,
not to be rude but if you check around this board you will find many many posts about the head gasket leak and piston slap as they are VERY common problems with this engine.
