Ok I have a 1979 Ford F100 351M . I Had the original carb on it since i bought it seven years ago. When the Temp. is between 78 to 95 degrees(I Live on the coast panhandel of FL.) and i sit at a red light for more than three minutes or I idel longer than that it will take off fine and then stall when it hit third gear (automatic). So I replaced it with a Edeldbrock Perfomace 400 intake and a Edlebrock 600 cfm Automatic Choke and put Hedman Hedders with Magnaflow exhaust on it. And it does the same thing as the original carb did. I sit at Idel for more that 2 too 3 minutes and when I hit third gear it will do almost the exact same thing as the original carb did. I have checked all vacume leaks and there are none.. Could it be a temp thing? Or Electronic? I replaced all wires dizzy cap ect.. and voltage regulator.
if your in the city, sitting for that long at lights, why dont you just put the trans in 2nd and see how that works. no shifting at all when its in second, so see if that cures the issue.
Didnt think of a pin hole in fuel line... could be that, i do smell gas every now and then after i drive it but see no fuel any where. The fuel pump is new replaced it just before the carb was put in. But i havent replaced the coil it is still original and for some reason im thinking it is a heat related problem but i could be wrong.
i had that problem with my 73, it would idle fine and start off fine until i shifted into third(3 on the tree), i looked for weeks thinking it was something complicated and then my dad sugjested changing the fuel filter, i did and never had another problem with it....
Agree with a fuel delivery problem. You're probably getting enough fuel to fill the float bowl at idle and while "cruising", but accelerating from a stop drains it by the time you get into 3rd. If that's the case, if you floored it, it'd probably start stuttering before 3rd.
It has a brand new fuel filter on it when i put the new carb on. Could it be that the fuel pump is not pumping enough fule after I idel into the carb? It has a new fuel pump on it. I also noticed a small kink in the fuel line going form the pump to the carb have'nt replaced that yet. The thing that has me puzzeld the most is when the temp outside is lower than 70 degrees it doesnt do it at all. The same thing when i had the old carb on it.
Ok it stalls when it goes into third gear . If i feather the pedal alittle it will eventually stop and drive normal after that. But if i stop at another red light for more than say two to three minutes it will do it again but after a few seconds of feathering the gas pedal it wil drive normal again. If i dont stop or driving highway it doesnt do it at all.
Had a coil wire do that once. Nothing like a 40 degree drizzling rainy roadside repair. However, my roadside repair held for a year and a half, when I later upgraded the coil. Hmm. Several things could cause this, from the carb to the tranny. Use the process of elimination to narrow it down. Eliminate/confirm tranny, check vaccum lines (shift modulator if AT), wiring, I'd hate to tear into a carb and find nothing out of adjustment there (floats needle/seats choke), but then atleast it's rebuilt. A very kinked fuel line will cause starvation. Which is what I'm thinkin' your described problem is.
