Hi, I have a 1998 F250 LD SC that has the 3rd 1/2 door on passenger side. I went to the grocery store the other day and opened the door to put the groceries in and closed door. Got home and went to open the door to get the groceries out and guess what, door won't open. I tried both door handles and nothing. It is like the door is locked, but no lock on 3rd door. I am assuming that a internal latch or cable failure is the cause. How do I get the door open so I can pull off the door panel to repair the problem? Anyone have any ideas on what may have broken? Has anyone else experienced this problem?
There is a lock on it. It's a little black lever that's depressed by the front door when it closes. If that didn't pop up when you opened the front door, then it's the same as locked...
(I say this and I've been in a couple of fleet Chevy's since I tinkered with a stretch cab Ford, so I may be wrong, but I'm thinkin' I'm not.)
Redwood - Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately that is not the problem. The lever is up and the door still doesn't open by either handle. What is the best way to get the door open? Do I pull screws and remove the handle in the side of the door and try to access the mechanism for the latches? Or is there another way to get the door open?
I was just about to post a similar topic when I was surprised to see this one. Only difference is mine is F150 and I slammed my door too hard. Very curious to know how to get the door open.
Anyone else have any information? Can I remove the door handle assembly in the side of the 3rd door and get to the mechanism to release the latch? Are there any actual SAE Ford mechanics in this forum that can help?
I'm betting you'll have to take it apart, no crowbar please. From a 97 maual.
Remove the 2 rear door window latch screws and pry the rear door window trim away from the door.
Once removed you should be able to see pushpin, screws and nuts on the top of the door trim panel, remove these then lift and pull the door trim panel to release the 4 clips and the panel should come off.
Remove the speaker and water shield and you should be able to access the mechanisms, won't be any fun with the door closed but once you can see what's going on you should be able to open the door, see whats broken and repair it.
Good luck.
