Breaking a BTS

Well I just swap out TC this past friday due to a broken sprag gear during last weekends pull. got it all togethere friday night, went pulling saturday all was well. went drag racing sunday all was well, made it down to say 10 trucks and building boost on the line and the engine quiets down and boggs down. tc locked! idle down track and hear some clunkage, shut truck off and try restarting, it started put it in gear and truck shuts off like the tc lockup switch is one, i disscopnected the switch and still the same, was dragged the rest of the way back to the pits, trailered home. I called brian this morning and he said all the internals in my tc are SHATTERED!

After the new injectors and airdog, I cant keep TC in this truck! Brian says there is supossed to be a new design comming out for his TC within this month. hopefully it fixes the problem.

All in All briand has been more then helpful and has sent me a new TC all 3 times and now this fourth time no questions asked, and promises me this will be fixed very shortly!

Well you've read the PSN thread and seen he is busting his butt to get a new one out to hold the new found horsepower a 7.3L can put down.

I have to say, I'm getting a little worried about this. I'm nowhere near Kris' or Kenny's power level, but I'm also running only a modified-stock trans. I've been laying rubber going 1-2 or even 2-3 nowadays. Tick-tick-tick...........

New found hp...

Come on JD you can't be serious!!

Cale's race truck is has nearly 2x the hp as Kenny's on fuel only. It's the vehicle they use to tear the crap out of new parts to see what works and what doesn't. If it breaks, it breaks first in that truck that sits in the BTS shop.

Kenny's motor has got some power for sure, but not enough to keep ripping through TC's like that. Brian's standing up for it which I wouldn't expect anything different from him. But there's something else going on that's leading to all this breakage.

I wonder if it's got anything to do with 3.73 gears and 38's...

Sure the TC is getting in a bind if it has to work with that combo. But IMHO, the TC isn't the only issue causing the problems.

Heck, I'd get a hernia too if I had to push an oil tanker down the track with my legs cut off at the knees!!

well i just pulled the pan, peices of metal everywhere. called brian again and he said it ripped (i forget what he called it) out of the pump, w.e broke works hand in hand with the sprag gear in the TC, its been the sprag gear giving out to (this part) 3 times now and now its the sprag gear that won and took (this part) out. He said hes only seen this one other time!

Tomorrow he is going to next day me some gaskets and new pump and such and i am going to install it as he talks me through how to on the phone. He is also calling PI tomorrow to have them build me a higher stall TC to help spool turbo easier and get power to the ground faster and they will next day it to me, so i should have it by thursday.

He is doing ALL of this just because I mentioned there is a dyno in dillsburg PA next weekend I was planning on attending to test out the new setup.

He said we'll do this and end of winter beg of spring for me to pull my trans and send it to him because he has a bunch of new goodies he will put in for me that will be arriving at his shop in the near future.

I personally don't think you have anything to worry about when basing it off of Kenny's power levels. You're running stock tires and gears. Is there a possibility that your stock trans with shift kit won't hold... absolutely. Is it in better shape due to the shift kit... absolutely. But as you already know, there's no guarantee that it'll hold. My guess is the next major mod you do to that thing is a new trans.

I truely think there's other factors in this case that are contributing to this breakage.

Hands down the best customer service in any business I've dealt with to date. And all without a written warranty... only verbal that I'm aware of!!!

Yes he's truck does make alot of power and probably the only one to truely blow up a block LOL. But it has been said and you have seen it lately they have been going through ALOT of TCs lately and alot more trucks are making more power then they were a few years ago. You do have to think sled pulling is ALOT harder on a truck then drag racing which is all Cales truck does am I correct?

You do have a point with Kenny's 8ins of lift, 38s and stock gears does make that tranny and transfer case love life

I agree -- 38s & 3.73s make for an unhappy trans. But in my case, stock 265s, 3.73s, and 2WD with a TransGo Tugger. It's not getting anything else unless it flies apart. I live in North Texas -- a trip to AR is a no-brainer.

There is a reason John Wood stopped using PI converters in his builds.

This is not a knock on Brian or his customer service AT ALL. I just know, that after talking with John, there's a reason he doesn't use PI convertors like he did 4 or 5 years ago.

Kenny, sorry to hear about your woes, brother. I know Brian will get you back up and running as soon as is possible.

As close as you are to John Wood, I'd seriously consider his trans. Ask Dennis at ITP Diesel. He lives in Arizona too and he goes to John's shop in Holtville, California for his trans needs.
