Engine Failure Survey
While this question often comes up when it comes to the subject impromptu crankcase ventilation, and while there has been speculation in the past about whose tuning may have been related to engine failures, it's not the purpose of this survey to throw ANYONE under the bus, but instead to look for common lines in relation to the failures. If tuning is a contributing factor, and I believe it is often the case, then WHAT in the tuning was a major factor (or factors) to the failure? Excessive SOI? Excessive ICP? Unstable ICP? All of the above?
Unfortunately, these questions are difficult to answer until we understand the nature of the failures. As mentioned, interesting trends are starting to materialize and I'm hoping we can get enough results in by the the time we return from SEMA to really paint a clear picture of what causes the failures and why.
So for the time being, I think it would be fair to ask folks to avoid the "who" question for the time being and focus on the "what" and "why".

Interesting. The more I think about this, the more I want to get into tuning. I'm running WAAAY bigger injectors than my stock short block will handle with Tony's tunes. I have the classic idle issue to work out, but so far, I'm extremely impressed. I'm praying to the PowerStroke gods that I won't be participating in this survey anytime soon. But for the record, I start and go, but "drive gingerly" until I'm over 150, or preferably, 170 EOT. I drive in my mildest tune until the temps are fully warmed up...
Hi Joe,
One of the very best things you can do for your truck and its longevity is to let it warm up, so kudos for that.
Just wanted to let you know that we have tuning software that works with your TS chip. If you ever decide that you want to play with your tunes, give us a shout.

Kuddos to Bill and Corey. I had seen this on another site and was glad to see they had spread it over here also. Also good on you for concentrating on the "what not who" aspect of the problem. best of luck and hope you find a definate trend so the rest of us can stay out of the"windowed block" club.

Thanks for the props, Barney. Ironically, it's always been about the "what" instead of the "who" for us, but I guess it was easier for others to assume the worst.
Whatever. That was then; this is now, right?
Thank you again to everyone who's participated so far. We're anxiously waiting for others to jump in with both feet!

If you've experienced any engine failures over the past several years, please take a few minutes to fill out the survey. Offering objective information is NOT bashing, and the information you provide will be very helpful to custom tuners and the entire diesel community!
Your personal information WILL NOT BE SHARED WITH ANYONE ELSE -- including any other custom diesel tuners! -- WITHOUT YOUR WRITTEN PERMISSION. The only reason we're asking for name, address, and e-mail is to prevent people from filling out the form with false information.
Can it prevent it totally? Of course not; we're not naive If someone wanted to, they could set up a new e-mail address and provide us with fake information. However, there are other security measures in place to prevent fraudulent activity, as well, and any responses that are obviously bogus will be eliminated and not be part of the final data.

Bill is going to start working on a write-up regarding what caused so many engine failures over the past several years; however, you are still encouraged to fill in the survey if you have experienced this yourself! Please remember that we will not be providing your personal information to anyone else unless you give us permission. In fact, at this point, we don't foresee a reason to share it with anyone else -- period.
We are still trying to decide when and where Bill's analysis will appear. We certainly don't want to be accused of bashing anyone
when we're just supplying objective facts. As soon as we make a decision, we'll let everyone know where they can find it.
again to everyone who has taken the time to provide us with some much needed data!

2. I think no matter what, someone will accuse/imply that you are bashing....someone. They just can't help but be negative.
Thank you for doing this!
Thanks for the post Corey.
