Ok i jus got home from an adventure with my f150. I was fixing to start my truck and i turned the key and it made a noise like something had broken, and i could start my truck and the fuel pump and ignition were stuck on, i got out a pair of pliers and turned it really hard and got it to start, but when i got home i couldnt turn it off, i had to disconnect the fuse for the fuel pump and disconnect the battery, i cant turn the ignition off i can take the key out while it is still running. please help me
Honestly Ive never had to replace one,but your going to have to figure out first if its the lock cylinder itself,or the switch assy. If memory serves, the lock assembly moves a rod that goes down to the actual switch assy at the base of the steering column.
Theres a 50/50 chance that its either one.I suspect however that since you cant get the key out,its in the mechanical part.
On the flipside...you usually cant get the key out unless the switch(at the bottom of the column) is in the lock(neutral) position. IF that switch is damaged internally it may not be letting the rod(previously mentioned) return to the proper position, thusly "keeping" your key.
My suggestion is to research(on the web) the replacement of your ignition key assy, and that may give you a physical schematic of the actual workings of your truck. You can then figure out how to determine excatly what needs to be replaced....
It sounds like you've broken the lock assembly. Autozone sells one for about $40. Depending on how badly it is broken will depend on how bad the job is. If it's already in the "on" position, then step one is already done. There should be a release button underneath the cylinder on the bottom of the column recessed in a small hole. It is accessable without removing any covers. Press the release while pulling out on the lock cylinder (once again, it needs to be in the "on" position, battery disconnected). If you can't get it out that way, then you're going to have to remove the steering wheel and break out a few more tools to get it out.
Sorry for the confusion i can take the key out without a problem. ok i found out Sunday that has nothing to do with the lock cylinder because it is still in working order. it is some kind of spring or plastic rod inside the steering column itself that has broken. it goes to the on position but will not go to the off position. so right now i have it rigged so that the switch that gets flipped by turning the key is loose under the steering wheel and i have to push it forward to start it, which is not very safe obviously. does anyone know if i have to replace the hole steering column or what?
yes i checked for recalls, and the small plastic rod wouldn't do any damage if it fell out so im not worried about that, i just want to be able to start my truck with a key, i will try to take a picture of what exactly i am talking about so people can help me. i really just wanted to know if i was going to have to replace the steering column.
Guess it was as I expected...I doubt if you will have to replace the column.
Your going to have to get with the Ford folks, and tell them what you need. Probably is an easy fix.....
re-read redwoods post. you need to take a needle or piece of bailing wire and shove it up a very small hole under the key. then pull the key lock cylinder out of the steering column. next take off a couple of the plastic covers around the column so you can see the key lock cylinder and the top of the plastic rod you are talking about. you need to replace the rod, or key lock, or both and the pin holding things together.
