smaller crank pulley?

smaller crank pulley?
i bought a 2003 f250 with the 5.4l, and the belt started squeeling about a month later so i bought one. when i went to put it on, it was too big. the guy at napa said that the belt he sold me was the right one. i had to get on that was about 2 inches shorter. well i looked at a company truck at work the other day that is the same as mine and noticed that the crank pully was a little bit larger and has what looks like a vibration dampner on it. also, my pully has 2 extra grooves on it for the belt.. so my question is why would someone put a smaller pulley on it? thanks
