engine burning oil!

I started my 2007 F150 5.4 this morning and happened to look back. a very large cloud of blue smoke came out of the tail pipe! I changed the oil about 450 mile ago and the oil appears to now be about 1 quart low. I used the same Motorcraft 5W-20 and 820S filter that has been used on the truck since new. I do tow with the truck but never exceed the tow capacity. I've been noticing that the inside of the tailpipe is black and thought that was due to the truck burning more gas than a car. I see now that it is oil.

The truck is going in to the dealer in a week and a half. Does anyone have some insight into this problem? The truck has 14,000 miles.

Thanks.

It would be my guess your not burning oil. These trucks like to let out a small puff of smoke when started cold (from excess fuel). I’d say just watch your oil.

I'm pretty sure that this is a recent development. I've never seen this happen before and I've owned the truck since new. It has never lost any oil between changes and now it lost a visible amount on the stick just in 450 miles. I'm wondering if higher rpms/ heat while towing may have affected the valve guides and or seals?

Well, here's an update. I've been checking the truck carefully the last couple of days. Apparently, the large cloud of oil was some kind of aberration.
I had been moving the truck, cold, back and forth in the driveway for 20 feet, stopping after moving forward and hours later moving back. I was doing this for 3 days and not running it otherwise. It was also tilted down on the passenger side. I can only imagine that the oil was building up in the cold engine in the passenger side head. Finally, when it was started the other day the oil must have leaked past the seals enough to get sucked into the engine when it was started and create the cloud.

I have been starting and running it normally since the oil cloud and there is no further blue smoke at all. The oil level now appears close to full! As I said, it must have been an unusual combination of circumstances that caused the issue. I'm certainly glad to see the truck running fine, now.

Some people report their truck will have a puff of smoke like you describe if you start it and stop it like you mentioned....I am sure that is the case!!
I am sure you about had a heartattack when you saw those things....I know I would have!!
