Stereo system

Has anyone done much with stereo systems in the 80-86 F-series? I have an 86 and the stereo is shot, and the speakers are gone. Looking to buy a decent set up with an average stero, but what size speakers will fit in the door, and dash?

The doors are 5 and a 1/4 and the dash speaker is a 5x7. I put a pretty good system in mine. You can get a decent amount of sound out of those not much bass but thats ok. Plus you can always build your own box to fit your truck.

i've had 2 aftermarket stereo's in my 84. you'll have to cut out the holes where the volume and tune ***** were and by an install kit. the stereo i have now is a pioneer with the ipod adapter so i ran the cord to my glove box where i keep my ipod. my speakers are 6&1/2" sony xplods. great sound, and where a breeze to install. i got all of that all walmart

That depends on what faceplate you have on your stock bezel. I didnt have to at all. All I had to do was slide the CD player through the hole and was good to go.

You can get the adapter out of a later model F-Series Heavy truck and put a newer Ford Stereo in your pickup.

Also Replacing the Standard Stock speakers with some newer FOrd Premium Sound Speakers will also increase the fidelity of the stock radio.

You can mix and match, and find some good stuff for cheap out there. Even at places that sell stereos.

If you are looking for new stuff, I would get a good quality system. Some of the real cheap stuff out there will make you wish you had a factory system again.

And take the time and get a adapter kit, and get yourself a radio bezel that you wont mind cutting up or a din style bezel, out of a 1985 or 1986, and keep the old bezel unmolested. This way if you ever decide to sell, or restore the truck, so you can remove the aftermarket stereo, install it in your new rig etc, and/or get more trade in value, etc than a truck with a gaping hole in the dash.

1980-1984: had **** and shaft mount style radios.

*1984-1986: had "Din style" mount systems.

*In 1984 it depended on which radio was ordered.

I had a fit trying to use one of the stereo adapter kits that are sold at all the Autozones and most eveywhere else as well. The fit was crooked and left a gap on one side and just overall not looking good at all. What I did on the advice of a stereo store was to install the kit as intended, but NOT to put the stereo in. I then took my DIN bezel and installed the stereo to it, and then slid the whole works thru the install kit. Easy-breezy to install/remove and looks so much better than the way it was before.

I use the mic holders to keep the stereo remote and phone within view.
