Well i'm a college student. I've had about 6 Toyota trucks since i was 14 (still have three) but have wanted a full size rig for some time now. So a few days ago i picked up this little beauty for $900
85 F250 with a 6.9 unfortunately it has an auto trans
I love her more and more every time i drive her. BTW her name is Norma
So i was wondering how to identify my model of trans. Is there a 4 or 5 spd manual i can bolt in?
Edit: Just read one of the stickies and answered one of my own questions
Can i just slap a turbo kit on my motor as is?
It's getting a little tired, little smokey on a cold start. Would a turbo be too harsh on this tired old truck?
Nice truck, good price. How many miles are on the motor? I have yet to hear of anyone having problems after adding a turbo to a high mileage IDI diesel. Seen several people put them on trucks with 200k+ miles. Smoke on a cold start is normal, it's just some unburned fuel escaping before all the cylinders have warmed up. You may want to hop on down and join us in the pre-powerstroke section if you have more questions about your diesel.
85 truck with a 6.9 would have the C6 automatic trans. It's a pretty good trans really, and if you truck it out with a manual valve body you can shift it just like you would a stick, only without the clutch.

277 or 177 it rolled over and i have no records of how many times. I'm guessing its 277 but it was a rarely used farm truck so 177 is a possibility
Good to know the smoke is normal, i thought i had a little oil burner (been there with the Toyotas... a lot)
Thanks guys. Looking forward to many years with this truck
Yes you can go with a manual transmission. The ZF transmission out of later F250s and F350s will fit in there. Also there was the manual transmissions (4spds) that came standard in the 80-86 years as well. The question is why do you want a manual? Is your transmission going out or is it just for a preference? The C6 is a bulletproof transmission but if a manual is what you want than its what you want. The turbo issue is a similar question. Why do you want a turbo?? Are you looking for more horsepower? The 6.9 may not be a race car but it will pull anything you want.

I've always preferred manuals. I like the feel and the control.
As for the turbo thats a good question.
I'm looking for a little more lively feel.
I realize it's not going to be "quick" and i'm not looking to push it to that point, i'll get a Supra for that. lol
I cant blame you on the manual I am converting both my truck that I'm restoring and my mustang that I am redoing into manuals. Personnally I would just leave the turbo off of the truck but thats just me.
When you say Toyota's, I'm assuming you mean the little 4 bangers. You went from small to over fullsize. Careful parking that beast until you get a feel for it.

Yeah, after two days i'm getting to know the frustrations of daily driving a full size rig. Women with lipstick and cell phones don't understand it takes two lanes to make a turn in a parking lot.
Nice Yota, one of the better off roading rigs I have owned was a 1980 toyota shortbox 4x4. It had a 2" spring lift with 32" tires, weber carb and header. I wouldn't mind having another one as a dedicated play toy.
nice rig man im a young owner of an idi myself .. your gonna have fun with that truck in the snow they are unstoppable.. I love mine without the turbo cuz it sounds reallly good and its different .. and if I didnt have my t19 4 speed manual I would want the c6 automatic like yours there super freaking tough auto trannys

Yeah theyre fun. Cheap too, thats my favorite part lol. Picked it up for $700 threw a motor in and $5000 later its locked up front and rear on 36" bias tsl's, got a snorkel, waterproof ignition system, bed bobbed a foot, suspension hangers torn off and replaced stronger, crossover steering conversion, all the interior replaced with newer crap, cb, winch, stacked exhaust, the list goes on
