Don't really know, I have never seen any tech material for the Bendix system either. I believe the control valve drag link can be interchanged because the length from the pitman arm to the steering knuckle is the same. But I did have somebody tell me that the Bendix cylinder ram and the Garrison cylinder ram will not interchange due to differend lengths.
But who knows. It is amazing how little information there is for these steering systems. Even the Ford truck repair manuals refer to these systems very little, with basically no repair or service information. I'm sure there has to be some service manuals out there somewhere, but I can't seem to find them. I went to our ford dealer to see if they might have something in their archives, (which they didn't) and the mechanics really didn't even know what I was talking about.
Huh?
The Ford Truck shop manual I quoted pages out of has complete information on how to troubleshoot the system, and how to rebuild the pump, the valve, and the ram. You need a get a REAL FORD manual for your year truck -- not that crap that Haynes and Chiltons puts out, which only speak in generalities, not detail. Real Ford Truck service manuals are available on CD-ROM for around $25, and it is the best money you will ever spend on your truck. The time you will save on troubleshooting and repair will quickly recoup your $25.
Both Dennis Carpenter and the dreaded LMC have the manuals for sale on CD-ROM.
n9lhm, are you talking about the original 4 or 5 book set of manuals that has red covers?
I don't know what color covers they came with originally. These are the real deal, though, and they go into great deal and leave nothing to guesswork. I would e-mail you the section about steering but if your truck is a '73 then the '76 manuals would be different.
Seriously, though, get the correct manuals. The great thing about CD-ROM is you can print out the pages in question for what you're working on, take them out to the garage and get them filthy, and then throw them away and not get your original book dirty.
