Power Assist (Highboy) Steering Help Needed!

Hey there..

I'm one of the few that does NOT want to convert from Power Assist steering to Integral Power Steering on my old F250 4x4 (1976)

I've been told rebuild kits are available for the valve assembly that sends pressure to the ram cylinder..

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank You!

i had a hunch that I should have asked you... heheheh

thanks mil1ion, i'll check into it

the biggest problem with mine is that it will no longer send pressure to force the piston back into the ram cylinder. it sends pressure for it to extend the piston, thats it.. in other words, right turns are great, left ones suck... hehehehe

we'll see where this goes. I already found the replacement arm to eliminate the valve, (manual steering parts) and don't mind going without assist for awhile until I can properly rebuild the unit or replace it.

Here's an article about them.

http://www.rockymountainmoggers.com/...rsteering.html

IIRC,The Company New Holland Farm equipment used these in their units so they may stock parts.

You may be better off doing a conversion.

Just search the word Garrison (Title & Message) here on this forum.

very valuable information.. I was about to dust off my shop manuals and get in touch with a ford parts dept guru in coquitlam I know, but I am very afraid of what he'd have to tell me.

The New Holland angle might be a lifesaver, but I will check all the articles.

I'll let you know how I make out with it!

Thanks again.

Pro Steering has my 'Bendix Control Valve'..

quite a little education I got reading through the moggers site in the above post, and the links I found with information gleaned from my garrison seals search.

Turns out I can get a rebuild kit for $70 or get a rebuilt valve for $250, $150 core.

I'll take that!

Thanks for the help.

For anyone else looking, here are some links:

You;re both welcome

How about I suggest that users first Patronize FTE's Sponsor sites.

Without sponsors this site doesn't exist.

People get Free Info and then people want to send users somewhere else

LMC is NOT an FTE sponsor.

I agree, although my main focus is on understanding that people are helping me with their knowledge and experience, and that in response I am very happy to help others.

I recognize that this forum for that exchange of knowledge doesn't exist without the sponsors whose products I end up needing anyway

I still reserve the right (in fact, it's often not a choice for me) to improvise and fabricate my own solutions.. to that end, it's a day off the reno for me to head into the garage and remove that Bendix valve and dismantle it. I need to drain the system and take the belt off the pump anyhow, so I might as well see if I can't fix that valve before I fork over a week's pay to replace it.

At least I still get to help others by posting a gallery and trying to respond to people who I see are trying to do things I've already been able to do, or tried to do... heheh

Thanks again, Mil1ion and everyone else

I have just completed disassembly of the unit.. mine is definitly rebuildable!! a pinched seal on the front side (side closest to the front of truck), and a piston that was sticking a bit seem to be my only problem.. the bore is still excellent, as is the piston and all other parts. A very simple setup.

I wont mind maintaining this power assist system now.. I have a cylinder that was recently rebuilt installed now, along with 3000 psi hose.. I now feel confident I can keep this system running without any desire for a conversion to integral power steering.

I will be getting a new seal kit from Garrison. I've also seen kits on ebay that replace the ball socket in the front housing, along with it's grease seal and a bracket to bolt over it all - which my rig doesnt have.

I will post pictures in my gallery of this in various stages of assembly for anyone's reference.

I just went through the same thing with my 76 f250. I decided to convert mine to manual steering...not too bad. Before I made this decision to convert, I sent my Bendix Control valve to Precision Products. The rebuilt the control valve and ball stud (and replaced the torn boot and clamp) for $144.63 (with shipping). Email me if you want Precision's contact info. rdjkmt@bresnan.net

I think I'm going to replace the entire unit. Once I seen them advertised for around $250, I was sold! The ends of the spool valve on mine are a little pitted, and I now imagine they will just tear the new seals. I would be interested to get the Precision info however, maybe I will do business with them.

I toasted a steering column by going without the services of the Power Assist System. After 1 year of parking lot turns, the bearings in my column are shot.

How did you convert? Did you just get the drag link piece in place of the control valve? Or did you do more than that?

I took the ram and pump off my rig. The steering box is manual, so that stayed. Added a steering stabilizer. I had to put spacers and longer bolts on my altenator to get all the pulleys to line up. I called Tony's Ford in Oregon and got a drag link and replaced the control valve. Got the front end alined. Here's Precision Products information:

Precision Products
24165 IH-10 West
Suite 217-282
San Antonio, TX 78257-1159

Go to Stangerssite.com and you can email the guy directly. His name is Randy. He's not the quickest guy but he does nice work. I have my newly rebuilt one for sale. I'll sell it for $200 plus shipping. You can see it in the classified section on this site. Good luck.
