Ignician Type?
1st what type of Ignician system does my truck have? There are lots of different wiring diagrams to follow... and Ive eliminated a bunch but still not sure.. Is my system a Ford Duraspark? Thats my guess and Ive heard others talking about it but Im not sure?
Also a big bold note says: Do not install the Hyfire 6a ignition control in any vehicle that is originally equipped with a CD ignition control.
Is that a typo, or am I missing what that means? I know I have coil with a half moon plastic bracket on it with what I belive is the balast resistor attached to the bracket. I also have a Napa TP-40 modual Which I thought this mallory would be replacing?
Which brings me to my last question: On the coil bracket there is a small grey cylinder (which seems to me should be the ballast resistor) but it only has 1 wire going to it? Is it really a ballast resistor or is it something else, Im not expert, but dont resistors need two ends? From what I can tell there are no places for another wire to attach (that may have broke loose, but I may be wrong here) also the one black wire that is attached goes to the coil terminal that has the red wire attached.
Hope thats enought info...If needed I can get some pictures togather tonight.
Thanks
The square DuraSpark ignition module is mounted on the left fender inner apron just in front of the firewall.
Inside the distributor is the stator (pick-up coil) used in conjunction with the DuraSpark module.
The grey cylinder on the coil is not a ballast resistor, it's the radio voltage regulator capacitor.
If it wasn't there, your radio would have static caused by ignition interference.
This is the (ballast) resistor: D7AZ12250A .. Resistor Wire-Ignition Coil (Motorcraft DY213).
#16 gauge wire / 49" long / 1.30-1.40 ohms resistance / color coded Red with Green stripes.
If so the install instructions kinda suck as it shows:
In the same picture diagram is shows
Hyfire 6a
black to Coil positive
orange to Coil Negitive
It also shows a picture of the plastic half moon collar that slips over the coil, but not attached
Red to red on half moon plastic piece labled C+
White to Green on half moon plastic piece labeled Tach
Then you have Black to Battery Neg and big red to Batt Pos and Yellow to Tachcmeter (if you have one) & finally Purple and Green NOT used for Ford Duraspark.
Ok so to me the coil & the half moon plastic piece represent the same connection points? after all it slips on over the coil... Well thats all fine, then you also have the distributer that has a black & Red on it that also go to the coil...
WTH?? How is that supposed to do anything? With that setup there is no way the hyfire would know when you turn it over right?
Now If I look at the TP40 modulater I have a white & Red wire set comming out and then also a four wire combo orange green black purple. All of which go into the firewall?
Can anyone help with this? I must be doing something stupid
The only other question I have is does the TP40 modulator go away also? The malory support person I talked to didnt know about that part, but I would think it does.
I presume this would be the same for MSD/Mallory/Pertronix etc Did you guys leave it in or take it out and if so do I guess I just leave the connectors open?
