No. Mercon V is available just about anywhere in many brands. Mercon SP is Motorcraft only and costs more.
You do NOT want Mercon V in your Torqshift.
Oh alright.
I saw someone earlier in this thread mention that mercon sp was $3 and change at a local store, and I remember mercon V being $5-6 when I was in a pinch and had to buy it at autozone. Maybe that's a knock-off SP?
Never the less, I'm gonna get the dealer service, and I'll make sure everything is done right (neighbor is a saleman there).

"Do not use in applications where MERCON® V, MERCON® SP, Continuously Variable Chain Type Transmission Fluid, Motorcraft® Premium Automatic Transmission Fluid, FNR5 Automatic Transmission Fluid or Type F Automatic Transmission Fluid is recommended, or in transfer cases."
I guess they are testing this theory on US. And as long as they still make SP, that's what I want in my transmission. When they have the ***** to discontinue SP, then I will know that LV is okay.
Maybe I missed something, please explain if so. I have a 2006 Powerstroke F250 with the 5R110 Torqshift. Just did my first fluid change. Initially I removed the rear line and installed the clear tubing, fluid pumped out of the transmission, it was not the return line.
The rear line IS the return line. If you were getting very little flow out of that line the problem was that the trans wasn't hot enough. The TorqShift has a thermostat that cuts the flow to the coolers by 90% when the trans is below 165°F. You need to have the trans warmer than that for the entire time you're doing the flush or it will just mix the old and new fluids instead of flushing out the old fluid.
OK Mark, so then was it just static pressure that caused the fluid to be pumped out the return port on the tranny? When I started this a little, maybe a quart, of fluid came out the tubing attached to the rear line but about a gallon pumped out of the tranny port. Also, if fluid is pumped from the tranny to the remote external filter, and temperature depending on through the cooler, wouldn't a person be able to get 90-95% of the old fluid out by just letting the fluid escape at the filter housing up front. I ask because I did this after my issue with removing the return line.
David B.,
I appreciate the chart, but as long as MERCON SP is available I'll be putting that in mine (per the owner's manual). I ask if there was any OK substitute at the dealership, since that is the only place selling SP here, and they said no; including LV fluid. They may be wrong, but need to find out at the moment.
Mark, can you provide a step-by-step procedure that should be used to properly flush the ATF in the Torqshift transmission? I would like to have that information to compare to the procedure used by my local Ford dealership and/or other shop in my area. I'm hoping that this procedure is one that I can do myself to ensure that all of the ATF is replaced. Thanks!
After reading this thread and some others and doind some more research on this topic. I decided that properly flushing mine at home was just too much a PITA vs the cost at the local Ford dealer.
I called them and they quoted me $189 (using Mercon SP, I expect LV will be a little cheaper). They use heated machine flush, which uses the transmission's pump (so no undue pressures are created that might damage the transmission) and they will use Mercon LV if I want that (and I do). Made an appointment for Saturday morning. They said it should take about 1 - 1.5 hours.
Personally, I have a *VERY STRONG* aversion to anybody touching my truck, bikes, cars etc (I was a mechanic for a little more than 20 years). So I will go back over all connections and recheck levels when they are done and make certain everything looks good.
