I guess it would depend on how well I got the process figured out. This is why I asked now instead of sometime in 2011...

I'm thinking if I can get some kind of large container with a thermostat controlled heating element, maybe like a turkey fryer, and a small hand pump that would handle the temperatures, it could be done fairly easily.

I figure if I were to invest $50 in equipment, it would be more than worth it.

Sorry to hear you're unemployed, this economy has been rough on me, too. My company's done better than most in the industry, but business is very slow. When you're paid on commission, that hurts!

Good point Tom... I'd rather learn to fish than be feed! Thanks for the compassionate comments on my employment situation.

Might be easier to gravity feed. Maybe something like the old steel gas cans with the fixed spout. Turned upside down. Cut bottom out. Connect a valve and hose to spout. Get a working heating element out of a discarded water heater. You could control the temp easier and less risk of fire. Mount it on a stand to get it higher than truck.

On a lighter note and a little more at Crazy001

Crazy cooking Mercon SP
Spilling Mercon down the front of his pants
After he finishes running up and down the neighborhood without pants on

What the wife will sound like 3 days after being released from ER
When the bill arrives from the doctor

Ok I'm done now Crazy Just please be careful dealing with 200 degree oil.

Actually I'm about 3k mile from needing my tranny done. If you would like to take a trip to CA, I would let you set it all up and try it on my truck
So will Mercon SP make a turkey taste funny? Just thinking of a way to recycle the used oil

That's what I think is right, and Ford used to recommend 30k. It sounds like they changed the recommendation after I left. I was not aware of that.

my interpretation is it changed because they switched to the larger internal filter and pan.

Hence the two different change intervals out there.

Crazy001, did you determine a safe way to change the heated ATF?

I'm still thinking about it! I only have 8,500 miles on my truck so far so it's not one of my priorities at the moment. Best I can figure at the moment is using something like a turkey fryer and a small pump capable of moving hot fluid into the dipstick fill tube.

It still seems difficult to heat and transfer that much hot fluid!

I don't know what they charge up there Tom but when I had mine done last year, it was $139 out the door for the full flush / change.

Wow, $139 is pretty good. You can't even get 20 quarts of fluid for that at most dealers!

I'll have to call my dealer and see what they charge. If it's that reasonable it's probably not worth the hassle of trying to do it myself. I REALLY wish there was a drain plug on our torque converters!

BTW, John, I like the avatar!

Yeah the avatar is kind of fitting right now down here as you can attest to...LOL!

Mine was done when I had my 30,000 mile service done on my truck last January and it was on the bill for $139. I was really surprised because I'd also read horror stories about the price in other areas but had no alternative other than to have it done there.

If you get a price that's too good to believe, check your receipt. Compare the fluid code to this chart:
http://www.maverickclub.ru/forum/ind...e=post&id=1675

Long story short, I got that price, the code on my receipt said they used Mercon V. So a couple of us ended up having to pay for another flush to be sure we got SP.

I'm confused. Mercon V costs almost double of what Mercon SP is, right?

And the dealer I contacted told me $139 for the flush/change as well, so I'll be going with that.

No. Mercon V is available just about anywhere in many brands. Mercon SP is Motorcraft only and costs more.

You do NOT want Mercon V in your Torqshift.
