Hi everyone, I have a 01 f350, this weekend when pulling my rv , the turbo would build up then go psst, psst, psst, psst, if i backed off the engine it would stop doing the noise and would run fine, until i started to pull hard again, i do have a dp tuner and it was on 80hp tow, this is the first time pulling with a tuner, i don't have a boost or pyro gauge installed yet so i don't know what the boost was, ses light didn't come on. is there a boost relief valve or something that would make that noise? this is also my first diesel, any help would be appreciated, thanks.
What you are hearing is turbo surge. This happens with the stock turbo wheel and a tuner. You can either get a WW wheel or an ATS housing to stop the surge. It is not good for the turbo to surge. Lots of people go with the WW. Give Clay a call and he can fix you up.
I do have a wicked wheel and gauges but haven't installed them yet, also a overboost annihilator, i was excited to see what kind of a difference the dp would make from stock. so i guess i jumped the gun on pulling, i do have a afe stage 1 and a 4" mbrp exhaust, also a southbend stage 1 clutch, the rv is about 9000lb, do i need to send the dp back to jody for a 60hp tow tune? the tunes i have are stock, 80hp tow, 100hp performance. thanks for the replies guys, i will definitely get these other things installed asap.

With a 6-speed you'll have an easy time controlling surge and EGT's until you get your gauges in to monitor everything. Just make sure you are running higher RPM's when pulling. This will get more air into the engine to keep EGT's low, and it will pull you out of the surge zone on the turbo.
When you do install the WW and gauges, watch your EGT's and see if they climb to high for what you tow. If it's hard to control temps, send the chip back to Jody for a lower HP tow setting. If you're towing light loads, 80hp tow setting will work fine most of the time. If you are towing really heavy, you might need to back down the power a bit.
I definitely wouldn't be towing in that tune without gauges ! If you are getting surge your EGT's are probably getting to high at that point. If you have to tow in that tune before the gauges... let off when you are hearing the surge for sure ! Moral of the story ?? Get your gauges in ASAP !
I think 9000 is a little heavy for the 80 tune. Definitely heavy without gauges, IMHO.
But you already have what you need to fix the surge, now just get it in and see where you are with the EGTs. That's your enemy at this point. Did you just put the chip in or do you have the exhaust & intake on now? With a stock exhaust & intake, I wouldn't be surprised if your EGTs were too high empty under certain circumstances.
Once you get the gauges installed, you will see why there is concern about EGT. You will be surprised at how fast they climb, and how high they can go.
I do have the exhaust and intake installed already, i have the gauges and ww on stand-by, but i will be getting these installed before i pull anything else, for now i will leave the dp in the stock position, thanks everyone for letting me know what is going on, i had never heard that sound before but i knew you guys could help me out, once again thanks everybody!!
You can still run the DP in any tune you want, just don't go WOT for an extended time. I would leave it in stock if pulling, untill you get the gauges installed.
