I have a 74 ford 360 4x4 that has a 2 barrel carb. I have ask a question like this before so dont shoot me just yet. I want to go to a four barrel intake and carb. A friend that has a 390 4 barrel intake with a 4 barrel carb. I dont know what it came off of but he says it will fit my truck. Is this worth it to change? Dont want to race just a little bit more power. After all what man doesn't . ps the intake and carb are free
If you are going o get a 4v intake get an aluminum one. You won't believe the weight difference. You would need 2 people to put a iron one on in the vehicle.
The intake and carb is not performance. Cast iron like mine already. And carb is the same one that was mounted on it.
It will work fine. The job isn't that bad if you have an engine hoist to lift the old one off and help you install the new one. However, if you have never had a hernia or a ruptured spinal disc and you want to experience what either feels like, try to do this job by yourself and without a hoist.
The nice thing about it is that you probably won't have to do much tuning on the carb to get it right, as long as it is in good shape. Just make sure that the manifold doesn't have any gunk buildup in any passages...and if it does, clean it out good with mineral spirits and wire bottle brushes before you go to all that trouble and through all those gaskets!!
You can't beat free, especially if it's something you can use!
you said the "F" word! (no, not THAT "F"word) free is good, but i too think you would be better off trying to get an aluminum intake. these fe blocks have the biggest intake around,so replacing the cast intake with an aluminum 4 barrel intake is a nice upgrade.its up to you. the 390 cast intake will fit if you do choose to try it.
My dad says a cast iron intake weighs in the neighborhood of 50-60lbs so you don't need a hoist to get it off unless you have either a hernia or zero ***** (this is coming from my dad who wrestled a bare 351W block out of a Galaxie by hand).
They are HEAVY, even in 2bbl form, I did one once,,,, ok well twice times I've done them, make sure you eat yer wheaties! But yes I agree, just going from 2 to 4 for free is worth the gasket set.
I would go for the free 4V upgrade. I would put my money towards a modern cam, headers and get rid of the points. I have a 73 360/4-spd. I pulled a 4v intake from the junkyard and threw on a 600 Holley. Much more enjoyable to drive around. Raised the RPM range by about 1000. But I realized when I was towing my Fairlane home, up hill from sea level to 2000 feet, that it needed more if I planned on doing that again. I had it topped out in 3rd but it would only go about 45mph in a 55 zone, and it didn't have the ***** when I put it in 4th. Towed great on more level roads. I pulled the intake from the junkyard and installed it by myself. I was 33 and in good shape. I would suggest having someone there to help whether you are a tough guy or not.
