tryied 2 different new wheel cylinders with no help. bleed the brakes a million times with no help. never used the ebrake so its not hanging. brake pads are still like new.

My thoughts would be shoes not properly installed or shoes out of adjustment or bad wheel bearing or ovaled brake drum.

well i switch the drum to the other side and it still does it. everything is installed and adjusted right.
so a wheel bearing will cause it to lock when brakes applied??? i do get a sqeeking noise every now and again on that side.

Perhaps when initially installed, the adjustment was just a little tighter than the other side. While this is typically not a problem since the self adjusters will adjust, if befor they adjusted, there was a hard braking condition, this would in essence burnish that lining better then the other side, giving it more bite/increased friction.

There is really no true fix other than tightening up the other side a tad and attempt to burnish it a little better.

A bad wheel bearing can allow the drum to sit at an angle to the shoes or run out-of-round.

Are we assuming that the brakes were recently done?
That the drums were turned and the parts are new?

What rear end do you have?
Is it the 10.25 sterling, and is it the one with the full floater axles?
If so, I doubt loose bearings would cause the problem as it would be obvious.

Also, is there a possibility there could be some DOT 5 fluid in there?
That silicone fluid acts as a friction modifier and a little on a shoe would make it grab and lock up before the others do much breaking.

Wheel cylinders are all the same size as far as I can tell from the parts available so I doubt that is the issue.

More info?

no the only brake parts that i know is new was the wheel cyclinders that i tried. i bought the truck a few months ago so i dont really no when they were done last. the shoes do look very new btw.
its the 10.25 which i assume is the full floater.
only used dot3 fluid when bleeding them. when i got the truck i put a new caliper on the front and bleed the old stuff out of the entire system and replaced with new dot3.none fell on the shoes when i changed the cyclinder because i took them off before changing to make sure and cleaned everything with brake cleaner.

but i did get around to scuffing the pads and drums with some 0000 steel wool and readjusted both sides. now that side only locks up if i hit the brakes suddenly or press them real hard. normal braking it doesnt lock up any more. but its still the only side that will lock up.

Regular fluid will act as a lubricant and if it got on one set of shoes, they will not lock, up so the harder you step on the brakes and the more force that is applied, then the other side will lock up.

Does it have electronic ABS?

> it does it more when the truck is cold.

Well, it means it is slightly off vs. the other side. If you want to eliminate this then trying using a brake caliper when adjusting the drums.

imho, You are looking at the wrong side. On a drum based axle, when one side locks up, you have to look at the opposite side when the obvious stuff fails to correct the problem.

no abs
it just seems like it does it more when the truck is first driven then a few miles down the road. could be mt imagination on that tho.

i might just go ahead and put new shoes on the back and get both drums resurfaced. then go from there.

Sounds like step one.
Sometimes one side locks up and seems over powerful only because the other side is weak.

if scuffing the shoes helped I'd try a new set of shoes
